Based on the Song of Ice and Fire books by George R.R. Martin, this game captures the feel of the series perfectly. It has alliances and betrayal, warfare and.. well.. warfare, and fighting, and backstabbing.
You play one of the great houses of a mythical land called Westeros. You are trying to conquer the most towns and strongholds to take over the throne and be crowned king. To do this requires much strategy, tactics, negotiation, and fighting. You have troops on the board that you give orders to each round. They can move and/or attack, support an attack, defend, collect power, or raid other troops orders. Each of these orders is given in secret and all at the same time. This adds alot to the tension of the game because you don’t know what your opponents are doing or if that alliance that you made will stand or if you should break one of the alliances you hold. In the end it all comes down to bloodshed and trying to be sneaky because it is usually the person who bides thier time that wins in the end. If you fight too early you become a target, but if you fight too late you will have fallen too far behind.
This game is tense. It is filled with politics and intrigue. Your nerves will be tried by fire in this game. You will usually make nothing but enemies. Just remember it is only a game.

Arkham Horror

First off, this game oozes theme. Set in the Cthulhu Mythos by H.P. Lovecraft, this is a game where the theme and story elements are the main draw of the game. I you don’t like H.P. Lovecraft or horror, then you probably won’t like this game.
You are an investigator that has come to Arkham to find out what is going on. Gates to alternate dimensions start to show up around town and abominable creatures are unleashed. You need to travel to these alternate world, fight the creatures, and have adventures in town. If you can seal 5 of the gates or have none open on the board, you win as a group. That’s right, this game is purely cooperative. There are many ways to lose, usually by an elder being waking up and destrying you in a climactic battle.
This game is epic. It is also lengthy(2-3 hours, up to 5 for your first try) although our group lost one time in about 20 minutes. There are alot of rules and you will have to reference them often. I have played dozens of times and still have to look things up from time to time. We usually win about 1 in every 7-8 games because it is that tough, but that only makes it that much more rewarding when you win. This is one game that you talk about the experiences you had playing long after the game is over.

This game is amazing. It is never the same. It is still fresh and relavent 34 years later.
Every person plays the part of an alien race that has a special power. The interaction of these special powers is what makes this game so special. There is a deck of destiny that determines who you attack, so you are sometimes forced to break an alliance by the game, and since it wasn’t really you that broke it you can still play the game and not get mad like most games with alliances. However, this also makes for some interesting negotiations and double dealings.
You invade other peoples systems to try and establish colonies. The first person to get 5 foreign colonies wins. But, it is not that simple because of the special powers, alliances, negotiation, backstabbing, etc.
This game is a real thrill ride and has never failed to be a favorite of every person I have introduced it to.
