Zombicide: Black Plague header

Zombicide: Black Plague is a standalone cooperative boardgame for 1 to 6 players that brings the relentless zombie-killing action of Zombicide into a brand new fantasy setting! Players control a party of survivors as they fight to rid the land of an invasion of zombies controlled by the game itself. Survivors find weapons, learn spells, battle zombies, and gain experience. The more experienced they get, the more powerful they become, but the more zombies rise to face them!

Zombicide: Black Plague layout

Zombicide: Black Plague is much more than just the classic Zombicide game you know and love, transported into a fantasy world. While it retains the general Zombicide mechanics, several changes and additions were made for this new iteration. Black Plague brings a whole new breed of survivors to Zombicide, hailing from all walks of medieval life, and even including some fantasy races like dwarves and elves! Each of these heroes posses their own unique abilities to face the zombie horde, from familiar skills to all-new ones.

Each survivor in Black Plague receives a quality plastic dashboard to keep them organized. A built-in sliding arrow tracks experience gains, and plastic pegs mark wounds and indicate new skills. Finally, multiple slots hold all your cards, making the new inventory system intuitive and structured. Each card’s symbol indicates the slot where it’s used. Weapons and magic spells must be equipped in-hand. Armor must be worn on the body. Special items like extra arrows can be stashed in your backpack. Survivors have varying equipment specializations, allowing them to equip a particular card on the body slot, and still have it instantly accessible.

Armor introduces a new twist for Zombicide veterans. A survivor wearing armor (or carrying a shield) has a chance of blocking multiple zombie attacks with a lucky roll (although it’s no help against the Abomination). The zombie hordes shuffling around Zombicide: Black Plague’s alleys were raised by powerful Necromancers. When these dark masters enter the board, even more zombies spawn every round. But, instead of mindlessly chasing survivors, Necromancers will try to escape and spread more dread across the land! If they’re not eliminated, the avalanche of zombies only gets worse! The always terrifying Abomination ignores your armor, and is practically invulnerable to your weapons. Your only hope is to lay a trap of Dragon Bile in his path. Light it up with a torch at the right moment, and you’ll see there’s almost no problem that can’t be solved with the judicious application of Dragon Fire!

Zombicide: Black Plague comes with dozens and dozens of incredibly detailed miniatures. Survivors have detachable colored plastic bases to help identify them, matching the color of the pegs on your survivor dashboard. The Black Plague tiles create a rich and intricate medieval town. Street zones don’t spread across multiple tiles, creating lots of twisting alleys for you to try and evade the oncoming undead. And if you find one of the secret vaults, you may be able to cross the entire map a lot faster (and you may even find a couple of very powerful artifacts down there).

“Waves of Zombies (and fun)”

I missed the KS for this one, but managed to pick it up via a trade and I’m glad I did!

The game is PACKED with minis and provides 6 heroes in the base game. The rulebook is well laid out and provides answers to most questions that would pop up during a game. Gameplay is fairly standard – take 1 of 6 actions (you get 3 total on your turn) and then roll dice to open doors or fight zombies. Enemies start to accumulate as the game goes on and makes completing your objectives harder and harder.

The player boards are excellent and keep everything neatly organized during gameplay. I enjoyed the visual of seeing what was in your hand and in your backpack while playing.

Right now I am through a few of the quests and see that I will get many hours’ worth of entertainment from the quests in the book. If you are fan of dungeon crawls, zombies, or minis, then you will not be disappointed by this one.

“Excellent addition to Zombicide family”

Zombicide was a blast but it had a lot of room for tweaking the components. Black Plague fixes the component issues with a sweet version of the game that slightly streamlines the play while adding card holders and pegs that my group hand made out of wood for the original game.

I love the fantasy-type figures and they take paint very well. The setting and theme work well and the gameplay is solid Zombicide. If you are familiar with Zombicide gameplay, this one sets up and plays in seconds.
