Of all the expansions released for this sprawling game, I truly think this is the only essential one. It adds the maddness/injury cards which are a huge boon and the only location board that’s really any fun, in my group’s opinion. We play with this add-on nearly every time.
This + the Base Set and you are, well…set. 😉

This is what I always refer to as “El Grande lite”. It’s a very good game.
However, the expansion, Pied Piper, really makes it shine. It opens up myriad combinations and possibilities. The base game contains only 1 set of characters, making replayability somewhat lukewarm.
The expansion makes things…awesome!

Best with 3-4, actually, imo. You lose a LOT of control in the 6-7 player game. Tons of fun and FAST!

Best league game, by far! With as many maps as we have in our group (over 20) we can have season after season of unique years. We put a little money in the kitty and have some great house rules to make the game fast and FUN!

My strategy in our first game was to grab as many star players as I could early on. Seems like a standard plan, no genius move there, I understand.
But to those who are learning the game or wanting to simply know more, I used this strategy to good effect (I won our 3 player game 50-48-32 or something…).
By seeing as many Star Players as you can you can sift out the ones that don’t work with your starter team well and go for the skills you are lacking or want to concentrate on.
Furthermore, there a a few Staff/Team upgrades that will give XP based on the quantity and faction of your Star Players at game’s end.

Rule: “Pit Lane Speed”

We use quite a few minor adjustments, but the one I find to be most “necessary” is a pit lane speed. We play that you cannot enter the pit lane (any space) in 5th or 6th gear. You also cannot ever accelerate to 5th or 6th while still on a pit lane space. So, 4th gear is the maximum speed we use to help balance out the pit’s advantages.
