As surprising as it may seem, this is a game where you can still grasp ultimate victory even if you manage to lose the majority of your highlights/tournaments. The human team excels at this, but it’s by no means the only one.
If you are behind the Star Player arms race or you find yourself playing against many brutal teams that kill off your players, let the leaders of the pack bash each other senseless in the juicy highlights and try to glean as much participation rewards as possible. There are several team/crew upgrades that help you wrack up points in the endgame.
I have found that avid use of the sprinting skill usually works in your favour. Each time you use sprint you get the opportunity to get one of those guard linemen out of the way and pick up a much more valuable player. When playing with for example skaven or wood elves, you can use sprint so often that you stay on top of how individual matchups develop and find the right players to commit to them. But best of all, when you’ve already used your favourite players, you can use the sprinting skill to quickly flush through the team deck and make sure you get to use star players (and other favourites) in every game round.
If you are playing one (or more) team(s) with lots of cheating players and you are slowing down the game by giving extra care to shuffle the cheating tokens without revealing their back side you can do the following:
Use some beads as cheating tokens on the player cards.
When the time comes to reveal the “cheating tokens” just draw one token per bead out of a container and look at their back side immediately upon drawing. When the round ends, put all cheating tokens in the container, give the container a rough shuffle and you are ready for the next round!
staff upgrades can add a lot of fans to your end score. Getting the 2 fans for every star player and then have 4 or 5 star players is a way to win the close ones.
I try to play for either the Staff upgrades, there are a few that give you extra Fan Factor for having Star Players or Freebooters after getting one of them always go for that type of player. In the end game it can gain you 10 or more fan factors
Being the first player is an up and a down. You will get the chance to select which highlights will you fight for, but all the other players will be reacting to you. This situation is quite important and so we like that all the players pass throught it the same number or times.
This can be made adjusting the number of cards of Spike! And then also you can modify for shorter/longer games:
3 player: Short play 2cards+Blood Bowl Tournament, Long play 5 cards + BBT
4 player: short play 3 cards+BBT, long play 7 cards + BBT
In any case to make the long plays, which could be interesting for more develop of your team, better the players be quite experienced, or it will become too much long.
Star Players are one of the best Keys to victory in the game. They carry a bigger bang in the blocking department. They have better skills and if you get the proper upgrades will add Fan Factor points at the end of the game that can pull victory away from defeat.
Some of the cards in the staff deck are a bit unbalanced.
The official changes suggest you remove the following cards from the staff upgrade deck before the game begins:
* Hall of Fame
* Fan Club Enrollment
* We’ll Get ’em Next Season
* Staffing Office (x2)
* Talent Scout (x2)
Here is an image of a custom 3/16″ foam board storage solution I created several months ago. There are cuts near card slots to allow your fingers to get down into the lower part of the tray.

Since the number of highlights dealt per week (round) of play is the same as the number of players, there’s always enough room for people to be in a minimum of two games, though the temptation to do more than this can be very hard to resist.
You must resist these urges! The game has absolutely nothing to do with win/loss record, but winning tends to help you out faster than losing does.
There are the odd exceptions though, and in my playing of the game there were two that became clear – the first is the fairly easy to spot “unbelievably good hand”. This is things like having devastating star players and all your best core players all at the same time. If you’ve got enough beef and a few nifty effects to help cover some situations, a well played hand with a ton of power can win multiple games and do it well.
The other is much harder to time, though just as easy to press your advantage with – the end game. If two players are intent on capturing that blood bowl title because of the high number of fans it brings, they are likely to just ignore the normal highlights in favor of ensuring the big point win. Don’t get me wrong, winning the blood bowl’s seven fans is a pretty tough obstacle to overcome, but heading into the final week in the game we played tonight I’m not sure the third place guy had even broken the double digits in number of fans, yet the game ended 47 to 44 to 42. I was the 44, Mr. Win-All-The-Highlights-For-The-Week was the 42, the guy who won the blood bowl finished first.
He’d nearly turned a game of being constantly dominated into a photo finish at the end because of his good card play in the final round while us front-runners were preoccupied.
Keep these kinds of things in mind when playing so that opportunities to take advantage of the other players through your good fortune or their preoccupation become as devastating as possible.
In my first few games I tried to get upgrade/staff cards along with everyone else. We were all fairly close in scoring… until I started focusing on fans (flags) alone.
Take every opportunity to put your cards next to fan flags in the match-up phase. Don’t worry about upgrades, as you will get some along the way, and I’ve found they rarely help you win. It’s a must to come in at least second on the tournaments. Pile up your cards and win those fans. Focus! Focus! Focus!… on the Fans.
Note: There are also some player cards with the ability to win fans. Make sure to use these wisely with weak players, as they usually score when you injure another player. Bonus!
Instead of mixing in all of the star players for each side only use the players of the races in the match. If a player chooses a non freebooter star player of another race choose again. Once a star player of the choosing player’s race is found or a freeboot shuffle the deck.
There are a couple of overpowered upgrade cards which give fans for all team upgrades at the end of the game. This multiplier will quickly push one player well past everyone. Try keeping them on the side. As receiving them is based purely on luck keeping them out will not affect gameplay.
We found that always putting 2 cups into the deck along with the Blood Bowl seemed like to many major cup games. So as a house rule we shuffle the whole deck and draw the top five cards and those are the spike magazine cards we use for our games. Our group likes this better
Keep an eye on your team and Staff upgrades. Forgetting to use them can cost you a round and then the game
My strategy in our first game was to grab as many star players as I could early on. Seems like a standard plan, no genius move there, I understand.
But to those who are learning the game or wanting to simply know more, I used this strategy to good effect (I won our 3 player game 50-48-32 or something…).
By seeing as many Star Players as you can you can sift out the ones that don’t work with your starter team well and go for the skills you are lacking or want to concentrate on.
Furthermore, there a a few Staff/Team upgrades that will give XP based on the quantity and faction of your Star Players at game’s end.
I think that the headline cards are a lot of fun, and miss using them in the official two-player version. Therefore, I make two Spike Magazine stacks in a 2-player game… one with the tournament cards, and another with 4 events, one played each round… including the final Blood Bowl round! This makes for a lot more chaos, but I think increases the fun!
My friend Mike and I have been playing a mini campaign. I am playing the evil (Skaven, Chaos & Orcs) while Mike is playing (yech) the good guys (Human, Wood Elves & Dwarves) We will be playing 2 games against each team. We are on our tenth round and Evil leads by 3 games and the Skaven team has the best record
When a tournament comes along, it tends to become a focus for everyone as it is a battle royal. Look at the highlights instead as, often there ate ways of grabbing fans while everyone else is fighting for the ‘big prize’.
Focus on maybe two highlights each round. You want top make sure you win the main prize and spread too thin may mean you win nothing.
