As we approach the holidays and face being stuck-at-home for longer periods of time, what have you been playing at your tables?
For my friends and family, it’s been a lot of Doomtown Reloaded, Marvel Champions LCG, GoNuts For Donuts!, Lord of the Rings LCG, and Carcassonne. What’s been an interesting turn of events is we have been playing over web conferencing like Zoom a lot. Cooperative type games like LCGs have shined particularly bright in that environment. One person “running” the mechanics of the game, everyone else playing along with their own sets in their homes.
I’ve probably played more table top games with my friends via technology in the last couple months than I have in the last 5 years combined. I’ve also found play groups on Facebook and met some new friends along the way. We’ve also used Tabletop Simulator from Steam to try out some different games. It seems we still have a ways to go but I’ve been thankful for both my game collection and the technology to play them in new ways.
What games have you been playing? Have you tried using technology to play them and how has that worked out for you?
Thank you for sharing this post. I hope you will share something more.

codenames.game is great to play online with family. We set up a Zoom to talk and play the game on our phones.
I’ve also played D&D online a few times lately and that has been working pretty well. It’s a good substitution when it’s all you’ve got.
I use an app called AppRaven on iOS. Someone has created a collection of every single board game that has an app. It’s a scrollable list (about 10 per screen) and shoed the App Store rating, number of raters and the current cost. Tapping the app accesses all the data for the app including a wishlist and an update/price history. I’ve found many cool games to play with friends.
Man, I’ve been hearing a lot about Overpower lately, lol. Team Covenant recently played a bunch of it on their Throw Back Thursday stream as well.
There is also Board Game Arena to try at home and we have a really good Overpower CCG website we can play on.
That sounds pretty cool, I’m gonna check it out this week so I can get a feel for it for the Thanksgiving weekend. Have a lot of gaming planned for that weekend both with family at home and family and friends far away!
We’ve had a great experience with Tabletopia. They have a version that works in your web browser, as well as dedicated software for PC, Mac, iOS and Android. Another nice thing is you can try it for free, so it makes it easy to see if it’s going to work for your group.
Would love to hear what other gamers are doing or using, and how things have been going for you! Or feel free to ask questions on how to get setup and run some games yourself!
