“Read all flavor text out loud.”

This is a story driven game and reading out loud will involve players when it is not thier turn and add to the immersion of the game. It is much better than just trying to “play” the game.

“AH Toolkit for iPhone/iPad”

Great tool to minimize card shuffling and set up. It will automatically pick Location and Other World cards and is selectable by expansion. Maps and investigator info is also available. Dice rolling too if you want it (though I prefer rollin’ the bones myself).

It’s pricey to buy all the expansions — heck, but if you’re addicted to AH, what else is money for?

“Choosing Investigators”

At game start, deal 3 investigator cards to each player. Each player choose his investigator. This will force you to use different investigators / teams in each game (and different strategies). Good for replayability too!

“Alternate Insanity”

If your investigator goes insane instead of losing half of your items lose half of you skills and spells instead. This better represents the psychological trauma of insanity. You still lose half of your clue tokens in addition to the skill/spell loss.

“GM the Game”

To save space and allow for easier gameplay, designate a player to be “Game Master”. Place all cards and the monster cup by this player. That player will read every card and instruct the players on what to do. That player will also draw a monster from the cup whenever needed.
Make sure the GM is someone who keeps with the general play style of the group (i.e. Don’t let someone who’ll insist on reading all the text for a group that focuses on gameplay or one who only wants gameplay in a group of flavor lovers be GM).

“Share clues”

We allow sharing clues when in the same area- helps with increasing the chance to seal more gates (after all wouldn’t you pass on any useful info to someone who is trying to help save your town in real life)?

“Use Elder Signs wisely”

Try not to use Elder Signs on gates with easy modifiers. If you have a choice between a gate to the Dreamlands (+1 to the seal roll) versus a gate to R’lyeh (-3 to the seal roll) using the Elder Sign on R’lyeh would be a much better idea.

“Setup the game before hand”

Due to the length of the game setup, I like to have the game ready to go people my gaming group arrives. The can definitely reduce some time in an already length, but awesome, game

“Don't forget the doom token”

Directly after placing a gate during the Mythos phase, put a doom token on top of the stack so that you don’t forget to add it to the doom track next turn if a gate appears.

“Utilize a "Mythos game master"”

For larger games or groups of newer players, it might work well to have a player (preferably an experienced player) act as a game master of sorts. They’d draw and read all of the Mythos cards, move monsters, keep track of the Ancient One’s sheet, and so on. This will let the rest of the players focus on their investigators and their strategies.

While this house rule won’t work for everyone, it could work to ease certain players into the game gradually.

“Making monster combat a bit more mysterious”

So you pull a monster out of the cup and immediately look at the back to see how tough it is. I’d say that’s pretty normal. But want to make combat a little bit tougher? Immediately put the monster down and don’t consult the back until an investigator enters combat with it. I’m sure many Arkham Horror players can easily rattle off stats for a few of the monsters (cultists, anyone?), but maybe not all…and that can make combat a little more mysterious and deadly.

“Decide to Seal or Fight”

When the fate of the world hangs in the balance, you and your team need to be working toward the same goal. You need to decide at the beginning of the game if you are going to win by sealing or fighting the Great Ancient. You will have a greater chance of success if you are specializing in sealing gates or obtaining equipment rather than switching strategies midway through the game.

“Set the mood with candlelight!”

It’s not always practical to do so, but playing by candlelight can really help the creepy vibe of the game. A couple of candlesticks can easily fit in the middle of the board and if you have dim lights or a place to stick more candles nearby, it won’t impede your ability to read cards too much.

Moving your investigators around the streets of Arkham lit primarily by the flickering of candlelight really adds to the atmosphere of mystery and impending doom.

Strange Eons:

“Sister Mary can't lose her Blessing”

Let’s admit it, a nun fighting eldritch abominations is just cool. And her “never Lost in Time and Space” ability is pretty handy. But her stats are a little on the weak side. So assume she has the Elder God(s)’ favor and have her skip the upkeep rolls and ignore Curse results.

It gives her more incentive to head to the Other Worlds (and use her ability) to shut down gates, or find her a Dread Curse of Azathoth and have her keep the streets clear of physically resistant/immune monsters.

“Elder Signs Are Key”

When I play this, usually someone volunteers to go sit on the Unique Item store and try to get at least one Elder sign. Since there’s usually one character who isn’t good for fighting monsters, this can be a good way to keep everyone involved.

“Zero Stamina/Sanity = Devoured”

If we want a harder game we occasionally play that any investigator who loses all of his sanity or stamina is devoured instead of going insane or getting knocked unconscious. This make things much harder and quite a bit more chaotic but it can be a lot of fun.

“E Tu Brute”

Always watch for someone randomly going into three buildings that are significantly far apart. He/she may make excuses for it like “oh, let me go here. I know you need me to kill creatures and I’m pretty full on health and sanity, but I know there’s a card in here that will help us.” Don’t believe him/her! Their brain has already been eaten by the Ancient Ones. It is no longer your friend! While you can’t actively kill the person, let the creatures roam in their path, blacklist them from trades. Do it. Your friendship will heal. But the sorrow of betrayal will never. …Or don’t, and laugh with your friend as he plays his devilish game and no one listens to you – Oh the beautiful irony!

This has never happened to me. Never.

“Game Aids”

Even if you have a good grasp of the rules, this is one of those games that almost requires a good flow chart for gameplay in order for it to go smoothly. There are many out there if you look around, but here is one that i use http://www.headlesshollow.com/downloads/games/ArkhamHorror_v6.8.pdf

“Remember - It's not A game, it's YOUR game”

One thing that always bugs me about this game is that the ONLY two ways to seal a gate are through coughing up clues or by using an Elder Sign spell. If one of my characters gets pulled through a gate during the Encounter Phase and she is not equipped to handle, the best she can hope to do is close it upon her return. Sealing is out of the question. If she leaves the area to collect enough clue tokens or an Elder Sign card, she has to return to and travel back through the gate. That is utter crud, IMO. I haven’t tried this yet but I’m feeling pretty confident it will work – Let your character who has passed through a gate return to it any time to close and seal it. It’s not like the character doesn’t know where the gate IS, for crying out loud! There are already so many cards stacked against you in this game that SOMETIMES you have to implement a house rule and level the playing field. You paid for it; tweak the rules to make it enjoyable.
