There are definitely some good candidates in the list.
I’d second the recommendation of Elder Sign for casual and family gamers (there’s plenty of fun to be had cooperating to save the world from the horror lurking in the museum, and the setup and gameplay are relatively straightforward), and Mansions of Madness for avid and power gamers (gameplay can become very involved and intricate, and setup is also less than straightforward).
No, I don’t have a Lovecraft fixation; why do you ask?

Probably some LOTR:LCG, Mansions of Madness, and who knows what else?

We’re hosting a gaming party, so lots of things: Mansions, maybe some Descent, Smallworld, Discworld:AM, maybe some Arkham Horror…

First run for 4 players: just under 11 hours.
It was an enjoyable experience, and I feel like it could be played in as little as an hour per (experienced) player without rushing.

The game mechanics sound very similar to those of Dominant Species. Can anyone comment?

I really like Carcassonne. My one big beef with it is that it’s fairly commonplace for one player, via a few lucky draws, to build up an unbridgeable lead before ¼ of the tiles have been revealed. Adding expansions seems to enhance rather than reduce this phenomenon.

I agree with @Jason P that the Dark Pharaoh herald tends to sap some of the fun out of the expansion by making it prohibitively dangerous to have exhibit encounters and otherwise acquire exhibit items.

Since I’m a huge Lovecraft fan, and my wife and I have been thoroughly impressed and satisfied with Arkham Horror, we picked up Mansions of Madness a few weeks ago.

I don’t think we’ve quite decided how we feel about it yet. We’ve played through a few times by ourselves (Protip: When there’s only one non-keeper player, it provides a much more enjoyable experience all around if s/he plays two investigators), and once with a group of friends, which was a small disaster. Granted, we brought it upon ourselves: we chose one of the most complex scenarios (The Green-Eyed Boy) with a large number of new players and a “limited” (5-6 hours) gaming window. We ended up packing it in with about 2/3 of the campaign explored and several players disinclined to give it another chance in the near future. Additionally, with only the scant number of plays under our belts so far, I’m already feeling a little concerned about the replayability of the scenarios, despite the keeper’s limited ability to determine and drive the story.

I’m hoping we’ll warm up to it, and my concerns will turn out to be unjustified, but it’s been a bumpy road so far…
