“Not for the "Run and Gun" audience...”

I have only played this game at a couple of game nights, and the one tip/strategy that stands out in my mind from those instances was this: this game is not for a group of solo, “Run-N-Gun” personalities. By attempting even the first maps without a teamwork strategy, the game itself will eventually turn into rounds of few options for each player (who, trying to be heroes, have exhausted all of their cards), little movement, and an overrun game board.

“Don't solo alone”

When you play solo, play with at least 2 characters. It gives you a better feeling of a squad team and it is more strategic. You can position each character and take advantage of the battle field. Playing with only 1 character can become very hard very fast.

“Use your follow reactions!!”

Movement is key in Gears, more importantly staying together and covering each other is critical. Leave a COG behind and he’ll be dead in a heartbeat.

New players often grasp the “Guard” and “Dodge” reaction option, but forget the “follow” choice. Using follow allows you to move out of phase with another COG if he passes through your space.

Leverage this to keep your team together, e.g. Marcus rodie runs 5 areas, everyone with the reaction card can tag along with a follow, and you’re both there to react to whatever Locust show up.

“Sticking together increases your defense options.”

When the Locust have the choice of multiple targets, the players get to choose who defends an attack. So sticking together (Follow reactions are your friend) gives you options for spltting up the Locust attacks and that can mean the difference between surviving or bleeding out.

This doesn’t necessarily mean everyone needs to be in the same area. Groups of 2 to an area, but both groups (assuming a 4 player game) within a single area of each other can allow for multiple things to happen (extra cover spot, equipment pick-up, etc…) while still giving the players defense choices. Many times if the players are all within a single area of one another, line of sight attacks can still be chosen between all 4 characters.

“Don't get too kill-happy!”

Sometimes, it can be worth it to avoid killing the last of a Locust type. As there are a number of AI cards will spawn more of a creature if there are none of that type on the board, leaving one alive can often make the difference between success and failure.

“More COG Character Cards”

For anyone who loves the characters Victor Hoffman, Carmine and Anya Stroud and was sad that they are not in the board game now goes to happiness (and killing) general, their COG Character Cards:

“Save Cole's guard!”

Augustus Cole’s special ability is that he can use any card symbol to guard AND he can guard after another player had guarded giving you two opportunities to keep the heat on the Drones. If Cole guards first though you give up that ability.

So let another player guard first and if it’s not as successful as you hoped call in the Cole-train!

“Sleeves, protect your cards”

A tip for the people who think of buying (or own the game). Buy large and small sleeves.

A pack of Mini American Board Game Sleeves and four Standard American Board Game Sleeves (increase in one of Standard American Board Game Sleeves if you have plans to buy the Mission Pack 1 – are 36 new cards).

Protect the game well, because when the excitement some sleeves can get wet (with sweat, ehg!).

Better than the sleeve the cards. The sleeves depending on the brand very last, the cards despite being a great graphic may have a little wear after about 4 or 5 games.

“Shoot! Shoot them!”

What is a game where you shoot and no one sounds of gunfire and explosions?

A tip to make the game more fun is to download via mobile sounds official weapons Gears of War and Gears of War also Black Ops.

Nothing like throwing a Grenade Token with the sound of “Frag!” and send some of the Locust to a spectacular death.
