What are you playing this weekend? (Dec 5)

Posted by Jim {Power Gamer} | 5-Dec-14 | 39 comments

The holiday season is upon us, we have to break ourselves in for later in the month when we’ll be having some epic gaming marathons! This weekend we’ll be playing Dead of Winter (which we finally played last week and are now huge fans!), as well as Seventh Hero and Pagoda.

What are you playing this weekend?

Sadly… a fat lotta nothin. But I will be sorting dbzccg cards as well as my Lord of the Rings: LCG collection. Need to get my gaming organized. 🙂

In honor of Repeal Day, we got in a quick game of Capo Dei Capi yesterday before heading to the National Museum of Organized Crime and Law Enforcement (AKA Mob Museum) party. I won first place in the costume contest!

Today and tomorrow’s games, if any, will definitely NOT be complicated ones! Ha ha! Now let me get myself another glass of club soda with lime and curl back up on the sofa…

Played a game of Runewars with two from my gaming group last night. And it became night before we where done. 8,5 hours until we had played through 7 years. A loooong game night that felt like it was much shorter due to the fun we had!
Going to do it again!

I don’t know how much time I will have for gaming – it’s a pretty kooky weekend.

Epic Resort from Kickstarter arrived the other day and it looks beautiful! The Emperor’s New Groove-esque art of the vacationing heroes is just too lovely. I want to give it a run – but reading the rules it seems far too Euro for my tastes. We’ll see – it may land on The Boy’s shelf in the game den.

I did get a round of City of Iron in last night with the long delayed from CSI Experts & Engines expansion. It added some interesting new cards to the mix – didn’t really change anything up, just created more options. It is a good game as it stands. The Boy and I will probably do our standard Sunday round of The Captain is Dead just because it so much fun to utterly fail.

Like the BGdot Boys I added a few bits and pieces to my CSI orders over Black Cyber weekend (you know just to get that free shipping) – the Daily Deals over the weekend were just too good – I had to place 3 separate orders for gaming gifts.

I can now add to the Household Horde:

8 Minute Empire:Legends (I have always been curious and it is by the City of Iron chappy)

A few new Munchkin boosters

Another Adventureland Card Wars Base (keeps the Boy happy – closest thing to Magic I’ll play)

Some game called Khrysos Hunters which I knew nothing about but it was $8. Meh

And the guilty pleasure purchase of Sedition Wars (in mutual agreement with his Boyship). I hear it is almost unplayable but at $25 for a $90 game I had to see. The box is so big you can play another game on it (at least)!

Mostly I think I’ll be reading rule books, sorting new games, and curling up with the Designers and Dragons volumes by Evil Hat (This has to be one of my favorite purchases this Kickstarter year)

@Andross I hear that quite a bit about X-wing players! LOL

@Account You did some wise cybering there. Well played! I did do the super cheap Galactic Strike Force for a friend. It isn’t as beloved as Sentinels in my book but I like it well enough. For the 20 bones it was – you should too. 😉 Did you see the $8 Pathfinder Class Decks? *nudge nudge*

Saturday – probably Compounded
Sunday – we are participating in http://www.pandemicparties.com/
and hosting a party: 3 tables with games all day, Pandemic with different combos of expansions.

And while people are talking online deals :
Cool Stuff Inc had the better deals for me this Holiday
But Miniature Market, Card Haus, Time Well Spent Games, and The War Store are my goto online connections, each has better deals on different types of games and different focus on stock.

Just picked up Seaside expansion for Dominion at my local game store… The chaining possibilities are off the hook (see what I just did there) hahaha

I just got my hands on Bang: The Dice Game, Hive Pocket , Space Cadets Dice Duel – Die Fighter expansion , and Dice Masters: The Uncanny X-men starter deck. I’m looking forward to getting some play time on those (I have on Hive Pocket already with my daughter – she’s tough). The kids have already played the mess out of Die Fighter.

At lunch time during work this week, I did get to play some Splendor and [redacted] for the first time. Redacted is not my cup of tea, because of the lying involved, but for those that are into that sort of thing it may be up their alley. Splendor will need a few more plays for me to get a better feel for it.

As far the topic on CSI and Amazon, I really enjoy CSI and I’m at level 6, but I still have to keep my eye on Amazon. However, there are times when they beat out CSI even with Prime free shipping (I’m a prime member). For instance, when Caverna first hit the US, Amazon had it way cheaper than CSI. I got Caverna at the time for $70 (should have waited for Black Friday) at Amazon when it was like $94 at CSI. Also, some games you cannot get anywhere else but Amazon. I’m looking at you Alien Frontiers. That’s a publisher issue which frustrates me about Game Salute. Of course from what I’ve heard about Game Salute, Alien Frontiers will probably be my only purchase from them.

BTW, my recent slate of games is from CSI. Their prices on the latest DiceMasters set were AWESOME!

Ah yes… @stratagon is more perceptive than I. I don’t know how they handle international shipping, and customs would be brutal…

@SeteNove – absolutely! CSI is coolstuffinc.com and MM is miniaturemarket.com. 80% of the time they’re cheaper than Amazon – although if have Amazon Prime and you’re used to free shipping, you’ll have to get to $100 to qualify for free shipping with CSI and MM.

The only time Amazon is typically cheaper is on very successful/available games like 7 Wonders or King of Tokyo. You will frequently find games at these sites 10% below Amazon, and sometimes more.

CSI also gives discounts to repeat customers – once you’ve purchased $100 from them (cumulative) you’ll get 1% off all your orders, at $300 it increases to 2%, at $1,000 3%, and so on.

Cardhaus is frequently cheaper than even CSI and MM, but you have to get to $150 to qualify for free shipping with them.

The best thing about each of them (or worst for your wallet) is their (usually quarterly) seasonal sales. They mark things down significantly off their already-low prices, but supplies are limited and they go quickly. Unfortunately, all 3 sites typically run these sales at the same time so you can get hammered.

While Cardhaus and CSI handle the site traffic for these sales well, MM’s website grinds to a halt and it can take 3 hours to get 5 things added to your cart to meet the minimum order quantity. It’s not fun, but the discounts are huge.

CSI = CoolStuffInc and MM = MiniatureMarket. I completely stopped shopping on Amazon after I discovered those. Not sure about their international shipping though.

@Account Deletion, could you help me out with those site acronyms? What’s CSI and MM? Are there sites that have deals better than what you would find on Amazon?
Hope everyone has a great weekend of gaming.

So I received a handful of new games this week, mostly from holiday sales at CSI, MM and Cardhaus:

Abyss
Lords of Xidit
Caverna
Eight-Minute Empire: Legends
Sun Tzu
Puerto Rico (an oldy, but I’ve wanted it for some time)
Galactic Strike Force
Artificium

As much as I’m itching to crack these, the only things I’m certain to be playing this weekend are Sun Tzu and Ancient Terrible Things to prepare for upcoming reviews.

I have a friend who just discovered X-Wing. It’s now become the only thing he want’s to play. So, I guess I’m playing X-Wing. Anything else and I’ll report back.
