None of the villains included in Infernal Relics brought as much of a challenge as the Rook City baddies, but Akash’bhuta has a unique advantage over other villains that complicates beating her: an insanely high HP (200).
Her deck will try to damage the heroes in two manners. First, she gets through the Environment deck quicker than any other villain… play with a tough Environment (the only way I’ll play her) and she’s much worse. Second, she attacks through Primordial Limbs… extensions of her Earth that do more damage to the heroes than anything she inflicts directly. However, when the heroes destroy a Primordial Limb, she loses their beginning HP (10-15 per).
To get through the battle with Akash’bhuta as quickly as possible (and alive, of course), I focus all of my attacks on the Limbs, and only hit Akash’bhuta directly when the attack is an “all villains…” type. This indirect route hasn’t failed me yet.
I discovered this little fact the other day while playing with friends, use it as you wish.
Visionary ongoing card “Psychic Coccoon” basically trumps Apostate. The card makes her completely immune to all damage, with the limitation that she is only allowed to draw cards on her turn. Since Apostate really only ever targets the highest endurace hero he will eventually only target her, after he beats down the other higher endurance heroes. It is at this point that she is immune to all his damage and can tank for her party.
Now this is not a game winner 100% of the time, it has three catches…
1) You have to actually get the card.
2) She does not get to do anything as soon as she gets in her coccoon. Which is not fun for the person controlling her.
3) Apostate has a card called “Armaggedon” (or something like that) which destroys all Hero and Enviroment cards in play. This would of course then remove Visionarys coccoon shield.
3.5) “Armaggedon” does not trigger when it comes out, nor when it is destoryed, but at he begining of the next Villian turn. This allowes any other hero who can destory a card to get ride of it before it removes Visionarys protective shield.
Personally I don’t like this little trick, I perfer a challenge.
As shown by their complexity levels, the new heroes in this expansion (Argent Adept and Nightmist) are not for beginners. When I am introducing the game to new people, I do not let them choose these characters until they have a better handle on the game mechanics and flow.
Tufnet of the Ennead has an Incapacitated ability to make each hero discard one card. This can debilitating if you don’t have someone like Tachyon-Team Leader who can help others draw new cards. If not, then save her for last. Find some other way to protect your weakest team members.
Use this house rule:
“At the end of the Villain turn, play a Villain card.”
2 Draws per turn for the Villain will give an excellent challenge.
Argent Adept’s most powerful contribution to the team is letting other heroes play cards. So, get Alacritous Subdominant and Inventive Preparation out ASAP. Aim to get Telamon’s Lyra for your first choice of instruments.
Play Arcane Cadence whenever you have them to get what you need. Team Leader Tachyon (promo hero card) is a great partner with him.
