“Tip for beginners: "Gotcha"”

Pay careful attention to what your opponents are doing and be prepared to deny them opportunities to get bonuses.

If your opponent has two Silver Refineries, consider selecting “Produce” before they do, *even if you do need it that much.* That way on your opponent’s turn he will be denied the opportunity to put down two silver goods. Watch closely; do the same thing with Trade, and so on.

By the same token, pay attention to when the turn will be over and whose turn will be *next*. Think beyond the current turn in role selection.

Also, I could not disagree more with another tipster who says this game does not play well with 2. It plays *great* with 2; anyone looking to play Puerto Rico should do that instead.

“Early Emphasis on building strong Production Buildings”

It is imperative at the beginning of the game to make the extra effort in obtaining and building higher valued production buildings like Silver Smelter or Coffee Roaster. The extra cards coming in is essential for investing in necessary higher point cards later, and it will give you a quick advantage over other players. Sometimes it is better initially hold off on building if you don’t have one of these two cards and play the role of the counsellor (allowing you max opportunity to locate one)for a round or two max. Generally, starting off strong in this games equates to ending strong!

“Big Buildings”

Make sure you do not try to hold on to a big building early in the game it will hurt you. Better to get building and take advantage of one that comes around later.

“Using chapel for card and point denial strategy”

Chapel can sometimes be an undervalued card, since you discard cards under it for points. However, the power of chapel is not so much in the points you get, but in the cards you can deny your opponents by hiding them under your chapel. For example if you see your opponent doing the production strategy, discard any guild halls you find into your chapel to keep your opponent from getting the big point bonus at the end.

“Tone down the Library for 2 players”

Library can be a very powerful card for 2 players. In fact, almost too powerful. Most of the time, the first person to get the Library wins the game. The best way to tone it down for a 2 player game is to either remove it from the game or only use it once during the Governor’s turn instead of each role the governor plays.

“Hone your San Juan skills on a free computer version”

San Juan is a good light game and playing against a decent computer AI can be a lot of fun. Plus games move very quickly!

Multi platform – JSan Juan

Mac OS only – Jim’s San Juan

I’ve played a lot of Jim’s San Juan and it’s tough to beat.

“"Speed" San Juan”

We like to speed up play by allowing all players to simultaneously to the job action for the jobs that would effect all players (like builder, trader, etc).

For example, during “Builder” phase, all players would build at the same time rather than taking turns doing it. Obviously, you wouldn’t do this for the “Prospector” phase because drawing a card only effects 1 player.

“Avoid with 2 players”

Although the box states 2-4 players, this game really shines with the full compliment of 4 players.

When playing with 2, each round the governor gets an extra turn which really messes up the gameplay, by taking away the true essence of what this game is supposed to be (Puerto Rico light).
