“Perpendicular > Linear”

The gist of this strategy is three tiles at a right angle are worth more than three in a line (4pts vs. 3pts). Building a line perpendicular will always gain you at least one point more than if you built on to an existing line. This is good to remember when you are in a jam and can only play a couple of tiles and also as the game reaches its end and your options are diminishing. This is also useful when using the blocking strategies described below. Wait and build up those qwirkles in your hand, block your opponents when you can, and gain those extra points out of nowhere even though your opponents are baffled as to why you didn’t build along the lines. Don’t worry, you’re thinking outside the box…or tiles as it were. 🙂

“If you can't get them, block them.”

As stated, you should definitely wait to try to get a Qwirkle, however, if there’s a row of 5 that could be Qwirkled soon and you can’t get it – block it. Playing aggressively and trying to eliminate optimal moves for your opponents is a viable strategy that can take points away from the other players.

“Hold Your Cards... I Mean Blocks ~ A Qwirkle Strategic Tip”

This may seem obvious, but I’ve been able to use it over and over again. If you have a group of three or more… wait until you can get a Qwirkle before placing it. Far too often I see people adding 3 to 2 and someone else gets the Qwirkle… WHY? Hold out for the easy money people!

BTW There are only three of each tile, so you can easily count and see what might be available to your opponents. This is not cheating, as it’s in the rules 6×6=36 108/36=3. You can use this information to decide when to place your blocks. This ain’t no kids game… so stop playing like one and make your niece cry. Mwahahahahahahahahahaha!

Strategic Tip ~ Keep your blocks until the best moment to lay them… Qwirkles ROCK!

“Play until Qwirkle”

Don’t want to keep score? Looking for a (usually) faster game? Play until someone creates a Qwirkle, and that person wins. In this variation, it becomes all about the blocking and can lead to more strategery and some cut-throat competition.

“What Version to buy?”

To anyone wanting to buy this game… Please, please look into the travel edition. Not only is it cheaper but it’s also lighter, more compact and just more convenient for this style of quick play game. It’s the exact same game scaled down so don’t feel like you’re missing out. Great starting point and if you do love it then you can always get the bigger tiles. Hope this helps, Game On!

“Never risk setting people up - Keep lines 3 or shorter.”

If you make a line 4 or longer, people have a really good chance of getting the two blocks needed to finish the line. However, it’s pretty rare when a line is 3 blocks long for someone to have the three exact colors of that exact shape, or the 3 shapes of that exact color. It’s better to start a new line somewhere than to make a line 4 or longer.

Combining this strategy with the “Hold your cards” strategy from Granny should help improve your win rate.

“Travel version!”

Buy the travel version even if you mostly plan on playing it at home.
Not only do you have the option to take a great game on the road in an easily portable and lightweight bag…. but the game doesn’t take up nearly as much space on the table (or shelf) at home.
Nothing is really lost in this great game by scaling down the tiles (and play area) to 25% of the original!

“Double Qwirkle!”

It’s pretty rare, but because of the rarity the points make sense. If you have a full qwirkle in your hand, you can play all 6 pieces on top of an already existing matching qwirkle, for a total line length of 12. You can vary the amount of points, and whether or not you have to play the full additional six or if you want to just be able to play to 12 in a single line.
