If you plan to crank out the goods, make sure you get a warehouse and a wharf. Someone else may be doing the same thing, and they’ll more likely be gunning to keep you from shipping your goods to Spain. Got to keep those VP’s protected and not waste the goods.
The Hacienda and University, used together, eliminates the need for choosing the mayor role, which can be game-changing late game when buying the victory buildings since you won’t need to worry about placing citizens in them since it is automatic and your opponents may have to waste a critical role selection on mayor to place theirs.
This is one of the most popular innovations to Puerto Rico, so you may already be an expert. The key to winning with Corn is try to monopolize it. Get Markets so you can make money. Build Warehouses so you aren’t throwing it away. Go for the Wharf (if you can) so you can’t be dry docked.
You’ll be getting Craftsman and Captain so often that you’ll have an honorary title by the end of the game, but with a Hospice, Hacienda, and maybe a few cheap commodities like Sugar or Indigo when you have more workers, you’ll be King of Corn and own all of Puerto Rico.
Purchasing the Small Market, Large Market, and Office early paves the way to victory. If you are able to establish those buildings, then focusing on coffee and as much corn as you can grab should elevate your victory points. Pick up a harbor later to ship all of that corn.
The rule to go by in early game is:
You should have a VERY good reason to pick a role that has no gold on it. Newbies don’t realise what a HUGE difference those free coins make. Seriously, in early game it’s seldom that much impact depending on what role you select, but having an extra gold in your stash is worth a lot.
This also goes for the prospector of course. Newbies tend to favour other roles, but the prospector is great. When you become a builder you help the other players as well. Yes, you build with a discount, but they get to build too. When you grab the prospector ONLY YOU will benefit from it.
Of course this rule fades away as the game evolves. As so many have mentioned allready, focus shift from gold to vp as the game progress. But if you still fight to grab those lvl 4 buildings, grabbing free doublons is still a great way to make money.
As a rule of thumb, avoid the plantations your right neighbour have. Most of the time you will be after them in selling as well as shipping. So, if your right neigbour go for coffee, you should instead go for tobacco. Of course, mimicing the plantations of your left neighbour can be excellent!
When you know you have a decent lead on your opponents, don’t give them time to catch up, start looking for ways to end the game as soon as possible. My favorite way to do this is through purchasing buildings. With the right set up you can generate the money you need and at the same time you will still be adding VP’s to your total. Often times my opponents have not seen this coming because they are more worried about how many total points are left, not how full my card is getting.
It doesn’t take long to figure out that some of buildings are much better than others. Fortunately, there is a lot more to Puerto Rico strategy than figuring out which buildings are best. But at the same time, a basic understanding of their relative strengths is a big boost. So, here’s a guide to the best and the worst.
Always Great
These are the buildings that you always want, and are fought over every game:
– Small Market
– Harbor
– Warf
Sometimes Great
These are the buildings that might be essential, depending on your strategy:
– Office
– Small Warehouse
– Factory
– The various production buildings
– The violet big buildings
Maybe Worth Getting
These buildings are useful, but they aren’t always worth the cost.
– Hacienda
– Hospice
– Large Market
– Large Warehouse
Only for the Points
Buildings you generally only buy if you have absolutely nothing else better to do with your money
– University
– Construction Hut
Only 5 roles are selected each turn – 3 by the governor, and 2 by the non-governor. This eliminates the opportunity for one player to select two roles back-to-back between turns, thereby making the strategy more interesting and making it feel a little more like multiplayer Puerto Rico.
Everything else remains as in the official 2-player variant.
I can’t claim any credit for this variant: I just heard it from someone on BoardGameGeek. But I can vouch that it is a big improvement.

If you like PR, but find that it doesn’t come to the table very much track down a copy of expansion#2-The Nobles and add it to your game. While I am not a big fan of the first expansion(The buildings) because it seemed to lead to too much hate drafting this expansion adds new buildings which are added to the game(not replacing buildings in the game), as well as nobles(which function like colonists mostly). some of the new buildings have game effects based on whether they are occupied by colonists are nobles. Additionally, Nobles are victory points at the end of the game and no matter what # of players are involved ALL colonists are used so that is no longer one way to end the game. The expansion is available in the Alea treasure chest(a collection of expansions for their games, and may be found for sale individually sometimes.
This is a simple Puerto Rico variant for 2 players.
Each player controls two player boards. The order of play is Player1_BoardA, Player2_BoardA, Player1_BoardB, Player2_BoardB. All the resources, buildings, plantations etc. are independent – separate for each of the boards. Players are allowed to select orders for one board to benefit another board. All other rules are taken from a 4-player game version rulings.
At the end of the game the player with more victory points acquired by his or her weaker board wins (Knizia-like rule). In the case of a tie the better boards are compared too.
Always sit to the left of the new player. There, I’ve said it. If you sit to the left of the newest or weakest player, you might not win, but you will have a huge advantage.
Why is that? The newest player invariably is the one most likely to Craft when it they run out of goods. They are most likely to pick Mayor at the worst possible time. The player to their left will gain the advantage of this misplay. Just make sure that not only is it you, but that you explain why a) they possibly just gave you an advantage to their own benefit, and b) might have been better off doing xxx, so that someone else won’t gain the benefit next game!
No, really, helping new players learn the strategies of the game (while not hand-holding them through it) is a great way to advance our hobby.
With the quarry you can get free or almost free points by purchasing different buildings. For instance, even if Im not harvesting any sugar, I’ll pick up a sugar mill for free just for the point it comes with. Lots of ppl let the buying phase pass them by because they dont have any money, or they dont need anything. Think ahead, your also buying points.
Colonists are one of the most vital early-game resources. With Hospice you can build a quarry and have it be useful to you, all in the same turn.
Hospice is attainable early and remains extremely effective even into the late game.
When you are governor you act first. That means in a four player game three people will act behind you. After that the governor moves one step and the same three people will act BEFORE you get the chance to act again, that is essentialy skipping your turn. This is the situation where you are the most vulenrable, and craftsman is almost always the worst possible role for you to take.
Now, all players are exposed to this, but be prepared and plan ahead for it. Sometimes stalling the game by prospector, settler or builder (the two latter will temp other players to be mayor) can be good.

It works great if you put it in a Plano box divided up that way. That way, instead of multiple bags, you have one box to grab and go. You can label the top inside of your box, so you know which compartments to pull from based on the number of players.
Try to produce tobacco and/or coffee as early as possible in the game. Then use the power of the trader each round to sell these crops for 3 or 4 doubles each.
Combined with a market (small or large), you’ll be raking in big doubloons each round in order to buy some of the more expensive buildings.
There, I said it. You know it’s true. This game is awful with five players. If someone says to you, “Hey, there’s five of us, how about Puerto Rico,” you should slap them and say “NO.” Then hold their nose against it until they understand.
Why, you ask?
Being the last person to Build or Settle, especially during the early game, is ridiculous. And in the first rounds, if other people happen to choose them early enough so that you get third and fifth choice, you are well behind your opponents. Can you try to manipulate the game by choosing the governor and not getting last choice twice? Of course, but then the strategy you are choosing to play is the “Not Get Screwed” strategy, which is easily defeated by one of the actual strategies of the game.
Why do we play Puerto Rico? Because it’s a German style board game, which means everyone is in the game, doing something functional, until the end when you see who wins. How do you make this less fun? When someone runs away from the pack or someone gets left behind and can’t catch up.
Or, I suppose, someone decides to play 5 player Puerto Rico.
We really enjoy this game and try to make it last whenever we get it out. To help us with this we skip the rule about playing with a set amount of VPs. Instead we just play with all of them and the game ends just as though we were playing with max players.
Keep in mind, even though it’s listed as 3-5 players, This game has excellent 2 player rules online, that make for a great game!
