Pay attention to your hidden goal – meeting that requirement is your #1 priority. It might seem that hindering heroes’ short term plans is more worthy, but long term it is that goal that will make or break your game. If you need to get one of the plot tokens to Stage III – put down plots that progress that one even if it’s just a 1-pt progression as opposed to 2-pt in one you don’t need.
Although it may not be your mission but it is still a good idea to try and move only 1 story marker if you can put out a couple of early plots for it.
First, you want one of your story markers ahead of the heroes to play the worst event for them and getting to the final will power up your ringwraiths for the final battle.
Once you learn heroes’ victory conditions, their behaviour can be indicative of the goal they are trying to achieve. Passive hero play will usually mean they are trying to avoid Corruption and that’s what you should focus on. If heroes are hunting your monsters for no reason – pour more of your actions into bringing even more to the table etc.
This is a gorgeous, wonderful, immersive game. And because it’s all of those things, character selection matters. Think carefully about which character you want to play and how you will play that character as an individual and as part of a team.
I may have played her wrong, but putting Eleanor in combat situations was foolish. I was crushed and just couldn’t get back on track. Also, @ArtemSafarov is a fierce Sauron 🙂
The whole mission of the heroes is to discard Sauron’s plot cards, and to do that you are going to need copious amounts of favor, so spread out! Try and cover as much of the map as possible and if you see favor nearby then go get it! When you are talking to a character it is usually better to take the favor unless the other reward is truly worth it. Also when it comes to spending favor for other things (discarding corruption cards) then really think about if that favor may be better spent discarding a plot. It doesn’t matter what Sauron’s mission is if he never gets his tokens to the finale. ;]
As the heroes there is usually no benefit to killing Sauron’s baddies (save for a certain mission). Sauron will put his minions and monsters in strategic places to preserve his plots and if at all possible go around them! Sometimes this is not possible, or going around would take more cards than combat, and that is fine but combat for the heroes should almost always be a last resort. A lot of people play the heroes thinking this is a war game and this inevitable leads to their defeat.
With Sauron there are plenty of choices to make, but always ask yourself this question: ‘Can I put any more influence in my shadow pool?’ If you answer yes to this then get that shadow pool filled up! Sauron has some truly devastating plot and shadow cards that require 7+ influence in the shadow pool. So as soon as Act II hits then get 8 in there ASAP.
Play the LOTR films soundtrack on the background when playing this. +1 to immersion and level of epic!
