Rough the marketplace, trade tokens allow you to get any resource that you need to build a building. This flexibility will allow you to make more effective use of the land that you auction for.
Just be careful of getting too many trade tokens, otherwise you will not have the silver (cash) to make good use of them.
Don’t forget that you can take loans at ANY time. If you have that bank, and don’t have a loan during the income phase, you can take a quick loan out, get your $2, and then turn in the loan for the bank’s income.
If fact, to go one step further, when I build the bank I immediately take out however many loans I can turn in by end of game!
Homesteaders was unfortunately plagued by production quality issues when it was first released, ranging from slightly off-center die-cut tokens/tiles to severe mold attacking cardboard components. This meant that the quality of those components in any given box was in question.
Fortunately, this wonderful game has since been re-released as a Second Edition (which is clearly identified as such on the box cover) whose components were made by a different manufacturer. The results are day-and-night in difference of quality. The board is now mounted instead of thin cardboard, the warping issues have been resolved, and tokens/tiles are centered, giving Homesteaders the presentation it deserves.
Don’t just go for what looks best each turn. Have a plan. If you are going for the commercial trade strategy, then winning that Industrial permit might not be that important. Pass and conserve your money for the next Commercial permit. Not every auction needs to be won by you. Overextending makes it very difficult to win.
