SET

Set is a great game where you are actively recognizing pattern matches. It plays very fast, in enjoyable, activates the brain, and is priced at a great value.

The only problem is that I find that the people I play with are typically faster than me at this game, which is humbling to say the least!

Blokus

My wife’s family which loves to play games but is not a power gamer like myself really enjoy Blokus. I suspect that this is the result of:

*Easy to learn and teach rules
*Direct conflict through blocking other players
*Immense replay ability
*Quick gameplay with little downtime waiting for other players.

A step up from Risk but it suffers from a similar problem of taking too long for how much fun it is.

With that said, if you want a WWII specific war game, then Axis & Allies is probably the most accessible.

Risk

Risk is a great game, but as a game published in 1959 it is outdated. I loved playing Risk in the early 80’s as I was growing up, but as of today it takes too long for how much fun it is.

Warmachine

Before I came across Warmachine, every minis game I previously came across had thick tomes for rule books. Warmachine broke that mold and built a simple and easy to learn system that controlled everything on the table.

It was a thing of beauty the first time I read through the rules.
