Apples to Apples

Apples to Apples can be fun, but I wouldn’t call it a game. It usually devolves into total sillyness, which is fine, but no one cares what the score is or who is winning. They just want to get to the next round and play another card to see what kind of hilarious combo they can come up with. It’s entertaining with the right people, but is definitely not a real game.

Cyclades successfully combines euro game style with ameritrash feel. It has auction/bidding, money management, dice rolling, combat, beautiful artwork and great components, and a great theme to top it all off. Fantastic game.

Kingsburg was one of the games that got me into board gaming beyond Monopoly and it’s ilk. But it soon started feeling very “samey” and was just getting old. Kingsburg: To Forge A Realm Fixes that. It breathes new life into the original game with a bunch of new added (optional) mechanics. Event cards, army tokens, new buildings, and more. Great expansion.

Innovation

Some people dislike Innovation because of it’s chaotic nature. You can’t plan too far ahead because the game state often changes drastically by the time it’s your turn again. The fun part about innovation, in my opinion, is having to adapt to that ever changing game state. Innovation is a lot of fun, but if you’re looking for a civ game that is more about planning for the long haul this game isn’t for you.

Puzzle Strike

I love Dominion. Who doesn’t? But when I acquired Puzzle Strike Dominion started hitting the table less and less. Puzzle Strike shines because of the player interaction mixed in with the Dominion formula. If you like Dominion but want to interact more competitively with your opponent, you should give Puzzle Strike a shot.
