With so many great games to play and see – classics, newly released and upcoming – Gen Con is a place of pure fun. When we were lucky enough to go last year we felt like kids in a candy store!
For those of you that are there, we’d love to hear what games you’re playing, as well as what surprises you’ve discovered as you’ve walked the exhibit hall and other booths!
Gencon #7 for me and #16 for my fiancee. I got to play in an EPIC Spell Wars tourney (tons of fun!), watched some Warmachine and Hordes as well as Mercs, demoed a few things, but nothing spectacular, and the one and only purchase this year was Legacy- Gears of Time (really cool!). I really missed the Boardgaming.com quests – they were so much fun last year!
Overall, another great con and I can’t wait til next year!
I took my wife and kids this year, it was their first ever and my 3rd straight GENCON. We bought the following games:
Snake Oil
Flaspjacks and Sasquatches
Hirelings
Dungeon Roll
Tapple
Word on the Street Junior
IQ Fit
Speed Recall
Eternas
Quadefy
Was mostly running a few of my protytpe games, but also got in several games of roborally.
Firefly
Game of Thrones
Dominion: Guilds
Ticket to Ride Marklin
Monster Factory
Misc LARPs
So much fun!
Firefly
Volunteered for FFG again. Was able to teach Letters from Whitechapel (and play one of those games), Rex, and Gearworld. Played several games of Crokinole. Played Drum Roll and Guild Hall. Demoed Trains and Three Little Pigs. Got a walk-through of Sails of Glory.
It was a blast, I am ready to go back next year, already!
I played Arkham Horror, including a 19 person version with all of the expansions (kinda a cluster f*** but it was cool to be part of)
Mansions of Madness, Call of the Wild
Elder Sign, Unseen Forces
Level 7 Omega Protocol
Zombiecide
Talisman
Last Night on Earth (In the Mega Tourny!)
Star Wars X-Wing
Wiz-War
Zombie Dice
Pandemic
Shadowrun, roleplaying but still fun
I got to demo:
Firefly (awesome, love their game system, kind of different)
Eldrich Horror (looking forward to it coming out)
Winter Tales
Hope everyone had a blast, my favorite time of the year.
Finished the con playing Zombicide: Prison Outbreak, Conquest of Planet Earth, Escape, Flash Point: Fire Rescue, Food Fight, Word Whimsy, Seasons, Hot Rod Creeps, Trains, and Level 7: Omega Protocol. A special surprise was having Tom Vasel (The Dice Tower)as the music leader of the Sunday Morning Worship Service.
Love Letter
Firefly: The Board Game
Spartacus: Blood and Treachery
Smash Up: The Obligatory Cthulhu Expansion
Trains
Cards Against Humanity
Flapjacks and Sasquatches
Card of the Dead
Romance of the Nine Empires
It was a good weekend for games.
Just got back from GENCON, and had a great time. Our babysitter backed out at the last minute, so I was only able to play Alien Frontiers (with Factions) and teach a friend how to play Keyflower.
But I got more standing (baby hands off) demos than I can count. I did spend a lot of time in the Game Salute area, since they were showing off a LOT of games, including current and recently funded KS games.
BoardGaming question though…as I said I didn’t get to sit down and play official demos, so maybe that’s why I didn’t see anything, but there didn’t seem to be any BoardGaming.com game demo cards (aka Explorer Quests) this year. Is that correct?
@Jim Hopefully you guys can get a booth next year (and hopefully I can be there to experience it!)
Had a great time at my first GenCon in 8 years! Met up with lots of game designers and publishers. Some of my favorite games that were demoed or played for the first time included:
Viticulture
The Manhattan Project (& 2 expansions)
Notre Dame
The Phantom Society (ie. Ghostbusters)
Keyflower
Big Game Catan (922 players in one game! – great fusion and unique pieces, cards and boards – I got dark purple)
Monuments
Parade
Buffalo
Red Dragon Inn 4 (even better when played with a real-live person who looked *exactly* like Dierdre from RDI1 – she clearly won)
Trains
***** Rail (3rd Perdition)
Lords of Waterdeep w Expansion
8-Minute Legends
Dungeon Roll
Village & Village Inn expansion
Rialto (more S. Feld!)
Snake Oil (party game)
Zombiecide expansion (Toxic)
My Little Pony (trading card game)
Love Letter
Werewolfe Inquisition
Firefly
Relic Hunters
Roll For It
Dread Curse
Lemming Mafia
Blue Moon City
King of Tokyo (and won a Space Penguin!)
So many more great events to mention, but I just got back from the 9+hour drive. Until next year!
GREAT experience overall. I fell so sad for those of you who were unable to partake in the best four days of awesomeness this year.
Here were some of my favorites:
Love Letter
Pinata
Caveman
Heroes
The Little Prince
Buffalo
Road Rally USA
Pathfinder
Dwarven Miner
Dungeon Roll
plus several other forgettable games…
I live 2 hours away, so I drove down for the day on Saturday.
I tried out Bioshock Infinite, Sails of Glory, Crokinole and Walk The Plank. Hung out for a bit with some friends there from our game group in Northwest Indiana that had a huge presence at the Con.
Hung out a little bit at the Plaid Hat booth, talked to Isaac Vega, the designer of City of Remnants and Bioshock Infinite. Talked to James Sitz, the lead playtester for Summoner Wars that I used to play Heroscape with on occasion. And talked to Jerry Hawthorne the designer of Mice & Mystics that I playtest for.
Good time!
I hated to miss it this year. I hope I can go next year, however, I will console myself with going(hopefully) to BGGCon in November.
Didn’t get to make it out this year. Maybe next year!
So far have been able to try Last Night on Earth, The Walking Dead (Cryptozoic), Takenoko, King of Tokyo, Tokaido, Dungeon Roll, SoM, DC DBG. Crowds are pretty intense or would have gotten a lot more in.
10-player Resistance. The resistance was crushed as Yours Truly betrayed his roommates!
No Gen Con for me either. I rarely go to non-local conventions, so this isn’t exactly out of the ordinary for me. At some point I definitely do want to go, but there’s no timetable for it currently.
I have been playing games, however. We’ve got extended family in town and I’ve introduced them to Carcassonne, Lords of Waterdeep, Once Upon a Time, and Castle Panic. LoW has been a particular favourite, which makes me all sorts of happy. I definitely have the expansion on my list of things to get.
As seems most of us here, I am also not in attendance. 🙁
