“Should I stay with the Equipment deck and try to get that (fill in the blank awesome weapon)?”

Only if you know what the odds of getting that Fill-In-The-Blank-Awsome-Weapon is. Here’s the breakdown of the 25 card Equipment deck:

5 Handgun cards (1 Combat Dice/Start of Game Load: 6 Ammo)
4 Rifle cards (2 Combat Dice/Start of Game Load: 4 Ammo)
3 Shotgun cards (3 Combat Dice/Start of Game Load: 2 Ammo)
2 Crossbow cards (1 Combat Dice/Start of Game Load 3 Ammo)
1 Machete (1 Combat Dice/no load melee weapon)
1 Katana (1 Combat Dice/no load melee weapon)
1 Metal Pipe (1 Combat Dice/no load melee weapon)
Then the rest of the deck is non-weapon Equipment
2 Motorcycle cards
1 Radio card
1 Flashlight card
1 Flashbang Grenade card
1 Silencer card
1 Body Armor card
1 Bandages card

“Poor box insert design - get something additional to protect your cards.”

The box insert design is visually appealing, but functionally lacking. If you transport your game from house to house, it will look like the set of the movie Twister on the inside of the box. Find something to protect your cards, or in my estimation the beautiful cards will suffer the consequences.

“Get a weapon at the beginning of the game”

Hate it when the zombie apocalypse happens and you can’t defend yourself?

During the setup phase of the game, each player draws an Equipment card. Some of these cards are not offensive weapons, which when drawn at the beginning of the game means you can’t defend yourself against the zombies. Instead, why not use a “rule” that everyone playing draws a weapon from the Equipment Resource deck at the beginning of the game.

When you’re more experienced, it is fun to have to think outside of the box to get a weapon and ammo.

“Swap out the six-sided dice for better dice.”

I’ve found that the 3 included six-sided dice are lightweight and very bouncy. They regularly shoot across, and off, the table. I’m swapping them out for higher quality dice when I get a chance.

“Defying the leader can help move you to a diagonal location!”

How to use food to move diagonally: if the Leader moves you one space, you can use one of your Food tokens to either move back to your original Location, or an additional space – essentially letting you move diagonally!

This can really be helpful in the Beginner Difficulty level of the game, allowing you to plot to move quickly for resources, safety, etc.

From the character card:

“At the start of your turn, you may discard 1 Food to defy the Leader and move 1 space. Use this ability only once per turn.”

“Newbie/Training Game? Get the max ammunition when you draw an Ammo card.”

For a newbie or training game, allow players to get the maximum amount of ammunition when they draw an Ammo card. For example, if the card says “Gain 1-3 Shotgun Ammo”, get the 3 ammo instead of the rolling the die.

Or, why not mix it up and only do it for certain rounds or certain players?

“Need some Food? Know what's left in the Food Resource deck...”

If you are hoping for that big Food score, take a look at the discarded Food cards cross referenced with the breakdown of all the cards:

10 “Meager Provision” cards (Gain 1 Food)
9 “A Hot Meal” cards (Gain 2 Food)
6 “Well-Stocked Shelves” cards (Gain 1-3 Food)
