“Deck suggestion to easily beat The Hunt for Gollum”

Here’s the deck, which was built using two (2) Core sets and The Hunt for Gollum expansion:

HEROES
Eoywn
Bilbo
Glorifindel/Beravor

NEUTRAL
x3 Gandalf
x3 Song of Kings

LORE ALLIES
x2 Henmarth Riversong
x3 Erebor Hammersmith
x3 Daughter of the Nimrodel
x3 Rivindell Minstrel

LORE EVENTS/ATTACHMENTS
x2 Secret Paths
x3 Strider’s Path
x2 Protector of Lorien
x3 Forest Snare

SPIRIT ALLIES
x2 Lorien Guide
x3 Northern Tracker

SPIRIT EVENTS/ATTACHMENTS
x2 Unexpected Courage
x2 A Test Of Will
x3 The Galadrahim’s Greeting

LEADERSHIP
x3 Sneak Attack
x3 Dunedain Mark
x3 Steward of Gondor
x1 Celebrian Stone
x1 Faramir

There are several good combos in here. The powerhouse in both games was Bilbo + Protector of Lorien. With this combo I was able to defend against any enemy (including a pair of Hill Trolls which I engaged one at a time). Multiple Song of Kings turns out to be pretty nice, since you can then have multiple heroes with it, and therefore more flexibility when choosing who pays for what. Te Northern Trackers — always nice — were barely necessary. Especially in the HFG scenario, just being able to quest Eowyn + Glorifindel for 7/8 was huge. A pair of Dunedain Marks turns just about any hero into an attacking powerhouse. My only concern was that it was almost too easy, especially in Hunt for Gollum where you often get to chosoe which encounter cards you’ll face. But I’m looking forward to seeing if this deck has what it takes to handle Escape From Dol Guldur.

But the real kicker was being able to include the most powerful Leadership cards without having a Leadership hero. Thumbs up to Song of Kings… it’s quite a potent card.

“Tips on Beating Hunt for Gollum Adventure Pack”

Here are a few tips on how to win against “Hunt for Gollum” in case you’ve hit a wall.

Use Eleanor. A lot of the sting in the encounter deck comes from “When Revealed” effects (such as Old Wives Tales). Use Eleanor to cancel these. If possible also throw in A Test of Will – since you have to add additional cards after and before questing, it is possible to end up with more than one “When Revealed” effect per turn.

Include Lorien Guides and Northern Trackers. This encounter deck is extremely location heavy and many of the locations have nasty side effects when traveled to. You therefore need to get rid of locations as soon as possible.

Make full use of the additional cards you add in the quest phase in stages one and two. Remember you get to choose which card(s) goes into the discard pile and which card goes to the staging area. Your priority should be to get the crows and the hunters from Mordor into the discard pile and to choose a “When Revealed” effect to add to the staging area, which Eleanor can then cancel (see above).

Deal with locations quickly. Especially the Old Ford – this can seriously get out of hand later in the game with more allies on the table so try and get rid of this location early in the game.

Consider using Legolas, the guides will help clear the active location quickly, which leaves Legolas free to attack and place progress tokens on the quest.

Consider using Bilbo. The extra card per turn soon adds up – over 10 rounds you are drawing an extra 5 cards each in a two player game. Helpful for getting to your power cards such as the trackers and guides, not to mention Gandalf.

“Pandemic-style deck building.”

In my games, we’ve encountered extremely unbalanced encounter decks, with creatures clumping and locations stacking up quickly. In order to balance this a bit, you can plan the encounter deck a bit. Divide out stacks of ten cards, with a few creatures and a few locations in each. Shuffle each and then stack them together. You still get a “random” draw, but within a somewhat ordered limit. This can prevent extremes of getting sudden clumps of strong enemies or long stretches of nothing but locations.

Obviously, some will prefer to play with the extreme random factor, but this method can make sure the game runs a bit smoother.

“Bilbo is extremely powerful”

I’ve read a lot about people questioning if Biblo was a misprint or whatnot. Yes he is a 9 starting threat cost and his stats only add up to 6, but that doesn’t stop him from being one of the best heroes out of all sets for a 1 or 2 player game.

One extra card every turn for the first player is huge, card advantage is always a game changer in any deck building game.

Put a couple Fast Hitches and a Burning Brand on Bilbo and he can quest block and attack all in one round like champ. Put any number of Dunedain Mark and Dunedain Warnings on him and he becomes an unstoppable force.

Combine Biblo with Beravor for ridiculous card draws. Gloin with Song of Wisdom to pay for everything. This is one of my favorite 3 hero teams for 2 player games.

“Locations, Locations, Locations”

Obviously, this quest has tons of locations, which fits into the whole theme of searching from place to place for traces of the elusive Gollum. It can border on tedious if you don’t plan for it, particularly when your clues get sent back to the encounter deck or discard pile. It may be obvious, but it seems the single most important card for this quest is the Northern Tracker. With multiples of Northern Tracker in play, you can make progress on several locations at once, without having to deal with travel effects. For most of the locations, you can easily explore them in a couple of turns, eliminating the cards and their attendant threat and preventing them from piling up in the staging area.

“Keeping Clues in play”

One of the more frustrating things that can occur with this quest is the Clue cards coming up as shadow cards. In that case, they would go into the encounter deck discard and be lost until you work through the entire encounter deck to find them again. You need the clues to complete stage three of the quest, so this could result in being stuck in the last stage until you cycle through the whole encounter deck. I play a house rule that a Clue card that comes up as a shadow card immediately goes into the staging area (as a Guarded card per the card text). In this way, the game doesn’t drag on and on while I have to work my way through the entire encounter deck. It still keeps the game challenging, but prevents it from becoming an excercise in frustration.

“Keeping things at arm's length”

I also like Dunhere in this quest. As long as you can keep your threat controlled, you can confine your enemies to the staging area, where he can attack them without them damaging any of your heroes or allies. He works well when boosted with attachments that increase his attack power. Combined with Northern Tracker, you can effectively eliminate both locations and enemies without risking a hit or shadow effect that sends your clue cards back to the encounter deck.
