“Random monster”

If you play enough you’ll start to learn which monster has the best mutations, instead of making powers random, we also or instead make drawing your monster random. Helps make it feel more balanced for new players.

“Randomized”

A few months ago, one of our character counter cards was damaged so Krawken can no longer be in the game. To balance things out, similar to what Vertabreaker mentioned, we have tried shuffling them all together so that all cards have the potential to be used. We still give each player their own pile to make sure there is a limit to the number of evolution cards a single player can use. This also helps the players that tend to like the look of one character (regardless of the evolution cards) have a chance to try out more of the different options without having to give up their favorite monster.

“Start with at least 1 evolution”

To make each character more unique we like to start each game where the monsters have one ongoing evolution. This allows for the different players to immediately start with extra strategy, and allows players to not feel left out if they don’t get to see any of there evolutions.

“Random Mutation”

Instead of dividing up and handing each player their characters Evolution card shuffle all of them into one big pile near the center of the board. Whenever a player rolls 3 or more hearts they draw a card from the top of the pile and treat it as a card for their character.

“Wait to Heal Big”

When playing with the Power Up! expansion, you get an evolution card for rolling 3 hearts. Therefore, it is most beneficial to you if you heal when you are at 7 health or less and you devote that turn to healing. Then not only do you heal, but you can also come back stronger.

“Putting Monster Classes to Use”

So this expansion assigns a monster class (Alien, Mutant, and Robot) to each monster, but these don’t effect gameplay at all. So my group started using this house rule:

Aliens resist a damage from attacks by robots. For example, if Kraken is in Tokyo and is attacked by Cyber Bunny with 3 claws, Kraken only takes 2 damage.

Robots resist a damage from mutants, and mutants resist damage from aliens.
