“Modified end game”

Designer Stuart Sisk has a rule about the end game, that over much time, I’ve house ruled. The rule has players, when down to the last two pirates, confirm if they both have Black Spots. If so, the game ends and they both are eliminated. But I have found that allowing the game to continue another round can be more satisfying – so the game ends when there is only one pirate left – or the last coin leaves the bag. Try this house rule and let us know what you think.

“Pay the Monkey”

Sure, the game is about ending up with the biggest stash of loot – so giving away a 2 coin to buy a Pirate’s Code card can seem like you are working against yourself. But remember, the cards are worth gold at the end of the game too if you haven’t used them. Many are worth only 1 gold, but that means you only lost a single gold, not two. And, of course, you may have picked up a card worth up to 5 gold. Which leads us to the next question… hold the card as part of your stash or use it for a clutch play?

And don’t forget, the Bosun’s cheat is the way to pick up another card for FREE.
