“Use Cathrals as a weapon toward the end of the game”

If you pull a Cathedral tile toward the end of the game, place it on one of your opponent’s larger cities, thus making it harder for him to complete the city and preventing him from scoring any points for that city if he does not complete it.

“No value in Big Monks”

Since no one else can claim your abbey, there’s no reason to spend your big Meeple there, unless it’s your only meeple.

“Big Meep handicap”

When playing against newbies, advanced players may use the big meeples from Inns and Cathedrals as their score markers. This is quite a fair handicap allowing inexperienced players compete with more skilled ones.

“Farm your large meeple”

If you have a large farm and/or others are trying to connect and share your farm, use your large meeple as a farmer. This way you will have more farmers in your farm without having to give up as many regular meeples.

“Cathedral defence”

As noted in a strategy below, Cathedrals are great weapons to thwart large city growth. Defend against this by growing your city such that at least one side of the space in which the next tile for your city would go is bordered by another tile. This means that the cathedral can’t be placed in your city and will become another player’s problem.

“Blow a hole in cathedral cities”

If a city has a cathedral and you stand little chance of sharing in the points, introduce new openings in the city as much as you can. If a single city edge is exposed, play a tile with 3 or 4 open city edges. Remember, an incomplete city with a cathedral is worth ZERO points in the endgame.

Also if you’re using the Carcassonne: Cult, Siege and Creativity expansion (which should be added here, ahem) lay siege to the city (e.g. add a siege tile to the city), thereby bringing it back to normal.

Of course, snookering the the city, playing tiles in such a way that none of the remaining tiles could complete the city, is worth considering, but
a) with all the expansions, there is a tile for every purpose
b) it’s hard to keep track of them all
c) the abbey from the Carcassonne: Abbey & Mayor expansion works anywhere

“Cathedral Mega City”

If you draw a cathedral early on, try to build a large city around it. Your big meeple can aid in making sure you retain ownership when the city is completed. Other players may end up helping you finish the city either because they want to see a massive city in Carcassonne, or because they’re trying to connect in.

“No need to play with all parts of the expansion at once”

As a house rule, just play with the big meeple and not the extra tiles. Or if you want to play with the tiles but without some of the extra nastiness take out the two cathedral tiles before shuffling. Carcassonne is a flexible game and you should tailor it to your own preferences!

“Roads”

When I play I notice I am the only one going after roads. It is easy points and with the Inns it doubles making them as valuable as a city. Do not over look the roads and use the big meeple as a robber to take them from your opponents!

“One extra point per tile for every Inn on a completed road ”

We play the Inns so that, for every extra Inn you place on your road, you get an extra point per tile as long as the road is completed. So if I have a completed road that is 10 tiles long and it has two Inns on it, I get three points per tile for a total of 30 points.

“Big meeple + The Count = Big points”

When using the Count expansion, place your big meeple in the city portion of Carcassonne. You’ll be able to move it to any city as it’s completed, stealing (or splitting) the points.
