“Get to Know Germany!”

Being one of those American public school products, when I first saw the Marklin map (Germany), many of the names seemed familiar, but their actual locations were confusing at first. Out of all the TTR maps, this one threw my sense of direction off the most in the first few games. If you’re not super familiar with the country, be sure to take some time to look at the map to help you with making route choices. The little line on the card doesn’t always convey how close or far some of the stops are.

“Shorts Routes!”

Especially in the west there are a lot of stops really close to each other. Don’t be afraid to pull 4 short route cards in the beginning and try to knock all of them off quickly. A lot of times, you can get a pretty significant route established and then use your passengers to swipe up cargo points!! Oh, and don’t forget to place those passengers wisely;)

You also get 10 bonus points in Marklin for the most completed tickets, NOT the longest route! So again, don’t shy away from picking lots of short routes.

“First Timers and Passengers”

I liked Andy’s house rule below, which also makes the game flow more for beginners. One rule we like if newbies to TTR are at the table for Marklin is to either A) completely leave the passengers (and cards) out of the game at first or B) limit everyone to only one passenger journey but instead of having to place the passenger at the end of the turn, we just let them declare their starting point. This helps newcomers focus on the basic mechanics.

“beginner's game.”

We have found that teaching new players (especially if they are not familiar with euro games) to play without passengers. This speeds up game play and reduces confusion. Starting with “ticket to ride” or “ticket to ride:europe”may be preferable but this has helped us use this game to introduce new gamers.
