“Thoughts on initial port choice”

When placing your first few businesses in the game, consider which river scoring cards have yet to come up. If you can’t build to take advantage of the current score card, don’t waste time trying. Instead, try to build towards a future river card where you know you’ll have a turn or two to get there.

“Know the end-game bonus cards and when to get them”

Normally, while any game will certainly be benefited from knowing what cards are involved, I personally choose not to look them up as I’d rather enjoy cards as they come out. However, with Die Goldene Stadt, I recommend being familiar with them. They are quite varied and can net you some significant gains towards the end. In the games I’ve played, if someone ignores bonus cards (or just doesn’t get the opportunity to gain them), they invariably lose.

On a similar note, try to build your businesses in such a way as to lock in a bonus card location or at least have one available to you. However, don’t build on it until late in the game when you have a better idea of what your best options are.
