“Avast Matey, Hire Some Pirates!”

Hiring a pirate is a must. A pirate will give you 2 swords, which in return will give you the ability to Repel ships of 1 & 2 sword value during the Discover (draw) phase. Having the ability to repel ships is huge because it allows you to draw more cards and diminishes the chances of you busting out and ending your turn. This increases your chance to find the Person to complete an Expedition, a Person worth big VPs, or draw multiple colors which would allow you to take more than 1 card! Drawing more cards gives you more flexibility and opportunity that your opponents don’t have. You should also consider supplementing your pirate with at least 1 Sailor to give you 3 swords or another pirate. You’ll be able to draw even more cards!

“Find Your Damsel”

Be on the lookout for the Mademoiselle cards. No, these aren’t your ordinary damsels in distress, believe it or not the mademoiselle is one of the most powerful persons you can hire. Mademoiselle gives a discount of 1 gold on each person you hire. This discount looms large in a game where gold is very tight.

“Go on an Expedition!”

I cannot emphasize enough that fulfilling an Expedition (or two) is a huge step towards winning the game! The Expeditions give you a VP boost and also give you bonus gold for completing them. The bonus gold alone is an immense help. It will keep you in the hunt for more recruits.

“Hoarders Beware”

Even though gold is tight in this game don’t hoard it for a big Hire. If a tax card is drawn all players with 12 or more gold lose half! Ouch!! So spend it as soon as you get it, especially if no tax cards have been drawn!
