“Fight for the Saga Cards!”

The player who completes the requirements on a Saga card is the one who obtains the card. Saga cards are worth VPs at the end of the game. If you find that you can only complete one or two Saga card requirements, then park your ship token in one of the ports required to complete the Saga card and do nothing. By sitting in the port, you block your opponents from swooping in and completing the Saga card requirements, unless an opponent has a Rune card which can move you. Then on your next turn you can finish the requirements and obtain the Saga card!

“Soften Up Your Enemy”

Attacking (raiding or settling) a high value port can be difficult. If you don’t have a Rune card which grants bonuses to attack, then trade with the port before attacking it. Trading not only gives you VPs, but also lowers the value of the port, making it easier to attack it on your next turn.

“Protect Your Assests”

Always try to settle at least one or two 2 value ports. There are a couple of Rune cards which allow opponents to force you to give up a settlement. If you have a 2 value settlement, then you can give it to your opponent instead of a precious 4 value settlement. As a matter of fact, if your opponent sees you have a 2 value settlement, he may instead target another player to gain richer rewards.

“Be a Well Rounded Viking”

Players can raid, trade or settle to obtain gold (VPs) during the game. It is extremely difficult to win by doing only one action or a lot of one and minimal of another action. A player should try to do at least a fair amount of all of these actions. By doing these actions, not only are you gaining VPs, but you are also denying your opponents VPs. For example, if you raid a town/city, the town/city gives you the hidden amount of VPs and is removed from the game. The town/city cannot be raided again. In addition, it is one less town/city for the ‘Bloodiest Axe’ player to obtain and pad his VPs.

“Use the Rune, Viking!”

Use Rune cards liberally. The Rune cards give bonuses to attack and move, and can also help you hinder your opponents.

Generally, players cannot attack other players’ settlements. However, players are allowed to do this by way of certain Rune cards. This is a powerful ability which can result in up to a 24 VP swing!

The use of Rune cards will also give a player control of the Wind Dial. Any time a Rune card is used or discarded, the player may give the Dial a quarter turn. This can make your movement easier and/or make it difficult for your opponent to move.
