“Online resources are awesome, especially for new players.”

If you want to get the most out of DnD 4ed without having to put in tons of your own time outside of the game, you should look into the online resources Wizards of the Coast offers up. You do have to pay a subscription for most of them, and I will admit I am no longer a subscriber myself. But it makes it easy to create characters, print out customized power cards, plan leveling, and a myriad of other tools. They even have a new virtual gameboard that looks like it has a ton of potential (sometime in the future). I reccomend trying it out for a while, especially as a new player, to make it easier to familiarize yourself with how everything works.

“Level bonuses”

I thing about the new edition of D&D that bothers me is that your attack bonus goes up and all monster’s defenses go up. So essentially, the number you need on the die doesn’t ever change, the math just gets more and more complex.

I am planning on revamping the way I run 4E. This will include taking away the stupid half level increases to defenses and to attacks and skill checks. Monster attacks and defenses can be standardized at a specific factor based upon what role they are. Of course, if a certain creature should be tougher, they could have a higher base fortitude. This should make higher level play go by quite a bit faster.
