“Keep your threat low”

This might seem obvious but it is very important in this quest. If you finish part 1 with a threat of 34+ you’ll be facing 4 trolls and a threat rise of 12 due to Louis ability.

If you can keep your threat beneath 34 Loius should be the last Troll you engage due to his threat raising ability.

“Gimli + Dwarven Axe + Citadel Plate = Super Hero”

I think the title says it all, but if you can swing attaching the Dwarven Axe and Citadel Plate to Gimli, have him get a few token wounds (he gets more attack strength with each wound), then you’ll have a great troll-killing super hero. I’d try to stall on the first stage as long as you can to get Gimli those attachments.

“Variable Number of Named Trolls”

One of heaviest factors in making this adventure so difficult when playing solo is the fact that no matter how many, or few, players there are, there will always be four of those nasty, unique, trolls. As a way to scale this quest (if you’re finding it as difficult as I do) is to use fewer Trolls.

For the easiest step in difficulty, use only one troll per player, randomly picked and kept face down until he appears in the staging area.
For the next step in difficulty, use one troll per player plus one additional troll; face up being slightly easier or placed face down for slightly more difficult.

And remember, when playing “two-handed” solo (i.e. 2 decks and 2 sets of three heroes as if two players were playing) still counts as playing with two players.

“Don't get in a hurry”

The first stage of this adventure is pretty easy to pass, but moving on to the second stage prematurely—specifically before you’ve built up your heroes and allies in your party—will likely spell death when the trolls come snacking in the second stage. You’ll want to have some allies (I call them sacrificial lambs) to take the brunt of the attack so your heroes make it out of the battle unscathed, and, hopefully, scoring some decent damage on the trolls.

In short: Don’t get in a hurry. Build up your hunting party. Bring on the trolls.

“Did you only get two Quest Cards?”

Then everything’s alright. This quest has only two stages which need to be completed. Unfortunately, the publisher (Fantasy Flight Games) left out the phrase the lets you know you’ve defeated the quest once the second stage has been completed. It may be obvious to some but it also never hurts to hear something confirmed.

“Hero Mix”

I’ve yet to win against this latest adventure pack, so take this tip with a grain of salt, but… it seems that having a deck constructed of two heros from the same color and one from another works well. For example, two tactics heros and one lore hero, and two leadership and one spirit, seems to be a good mix.

“Don't Dis the Hobbits”

At first glance, Bilbo and Frodo seem to be weak, and with some adventures they may be, but with this adventure the extra cards and strong life, respectively, provide much help during the adventure. Give the hobbits a chance…
