“Scoring Phases as Motivation”

General opinion is that this game is great just as an experience and you can drop scoring altogether. That certainly is true, but if your group desires a bit more competition, this alternate scoring method may help.

Everyone plays on their own. Each person gets a predetermined amount of turns as clue giver. Each round everyone uses the same difficulty level clue.

Clue solvers gain 2 points.

Clue givers gain points based on how soon they can communicate their concept.

0-3 minutes = 3 points
3-6 minutes = 2 points
6-9 minutes = 1 point

This format will keep the game moving by encouraging the clue giver to maintain a decent pace. It will also cap the amount of time for each clue and prevent the game from dragging.

Feel free to adjust the sample time phases to suit your group and/or timing devices (Sand timers will be specific, wall clocks may be easier with 5 minute intervals…).

“Yes, No, Maybe So...?”

The rules state that the only word the person with the concept can say is “Yes”. For the first few games out of the box, we decided “No” was acceptable, too.

After a few plays, we amped up the difficulty and outlawed any speaking.

“Passing your first pick”

Since our family has gamers of all ages, and since the category cards have items that both young and old sometimes don’t understand (an older member didn’t know who the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were, for example), we have a house rule that allows the person to pass their first pick. However, they’re stuck with their second pick.
