Don’t put the same color on a stack more than once unless the other players have already picked their stack for the round. A stack with two of the same color will not likely be available to you on your next turn.
My wife and I love this game, but when just the two of us are playing, the rules change drastically.
When we are playing using the grey scoring sheet and grey card rows, usually the person who snatches up the most +2 cards wins the game, no matter how well the other person plays. To even things out, try removing 5-6 of the 10 +2 cards. Instead of putting 15 cards before the “last round” card, only put 10 because of the reduced number of playable cards. This evens things out nicely and lets a little strategy back into the game.
I’ve seen it happen many times, a player starts the game with a certain color, and will keep trying to collect cards of that color, when others may be better. This tends to extend to the first few colors a person collects. Always be on the lookout for the best play, even it forces your initial card colors to become your “negative” suit.
For instance, if after the first couple of rounds, you’ve ended up with one or two of four different colors. Many players will focus on the first three colors they collected, and mentally assume the fourth color they collected will be a negative color. If you can break out of this mindset, you may find that, even though a card was your fourth color, it is just as good to you as any other single color card. Don’t just go for your first three colors, train yourself to always look for the best value, even if it means ignoring the colors you started the game accumulating.
Coloretto is the kind of game that can get you all wrapped up in what you need, and forget that other people are looking for. Coloretto is tactical more than strategic. Pay attention to what others are trying to get and steal it… or better yet, leave them with the cards they don’t want. DO NOT PLAY SOLITAIRE.
Whenever I start a new game, I always pick my starting color randomly. Usually everyone else follows suit. This way, if more people have the same color, there is more of a sense of competition right from the start.
From my experience, if there is a wild card available, grab that row. Even when the wild is the only card in a row, I will generally grab it, and be happy at the end of the game that I did.
You don’t have to declare what color the wild will be until the end of the game, at which time you can always add it to your best color for maximum points.
For valuation purposes, I generally assume a wild card will be worth at least five points at the end of the game (taking a color I have four of to five, or five to six). Unless you see a row that can top those points, it’s usually to your benefit to grab that wild before your opponents can.
