“Round Robin First Player”

Similar to Southpaw’s tip we’ve found the best way not to get stuck as first player every round is to just pass the player one ship stand that came with the game (Tanker ship that’s named Primus) clockwise at the start of every round.

“Syndicalism can be good.”

Syndicates can actually be put into work to be able to keep up in the bidding on the locations where the best goodies are. If you keep getting outbid by one coin but really want to get those gold bars you need to buy that sweet little Municipality there is, as far as I’ve seen, nothing in the rules to keep you from withdrawing your bid, get the two free coins and then use those coins to place a new, higher bid…

“Black Market”

If you are funding low on funds but need items, going to the black market may be the free concept for you. For each ship you place in the Black Market you can either A. Exchange one of your goods for another on the Black Market, or B. You can draw a free mystery good from the bag. You could place all your ships in the Black Market and continually draw free goods every turn, but in the end you will likely lose. However Drawing a free good from the bag (for every ship you place in the Black Market) when you have no money can be very rewarding on occasion.

“Explain Syndicate Carefully”

The text on the syndicate card is somewhat misleading. My first game, I was convinced that a syndicate gave 2 coins for each retracted bid and a second syndicate would stack to give 4 coins for each retracted bid. It wasn’t until I bought 2 syndicates and tried to claim those 4 coins that the more experienced players explained that the second syndicate merely lets you claim the bonus for two separate ports on the same turn…

…which means I probably unwittingly cheated at least a couple of times earlier that game, taking the bonus twice in a turn when I had only one syndicate…

So, for those teaching the game, this is a good thing to make sure you cover carefully.

“I'm king of the ocean Ma!”

Buy your 4th and 5th ships as quickly as possible. They will give you more options which can’t be underestimated. If you do not buy a warehouse by mid-game chances are you won’t need it and you won’t usually need the second one unless your opponents are letting you run away with the game.

“Count Tiles”

When you’re saving up to sell a big set of matching tiles, it can be very helpful to know how many are left to be drawn. If you’re nearing the end of the bag and you know there are more matching tiles in there, you can try to get them before you cash in, leveraging the quadratic price increase. On the other hand, if there are none left to draw, then you’re wasting your time (and storage space) trying to find more.

“Seating Position Determined Randomly”

Because the player to one’s right can cause havoc with one’s game play, roll a die to determine in what order each player chooses his or her seat at the table.
