Arguably the biggest complaint about this game is the cube tower and how little it actually randomizes the actions. We find that 4-5 cubes of the current color is a decent result each round with 2-4 actions present.
If we start seeing a “faster” game due to 6 or 7 cubes coming out with one or no other colors, we agree to re-seed the tower again between each round.
After the white cubes are resolved, we leave whatever cubes might be in the tower and then gather up the remaining ones on the board for another toss.
This seems to keep the actions tighter and makes for a more rewarding game experience. Otherwise, it seems that you get more and more Action Points with less and less options and so run through everything you can do before the final round is played out.
Queen Games produces extra game components for many of their boardgames. They are referred to by the company as Queenies(+)game name and a number such as Queenie Amerigo #2. Go to Boardgamegeek.com and look at the online store or check the Queen Game website to find a list of the tiles.
It pays to count cubes in this game. There are only 7 cubes total in each of the 7 colors. When you are trying to plan out future actions, do a quick count of the actions to see if the desired action has the potential to come out again. This is especially crucial with Black Cannons in the later rounds.
If all 7 black cubes come out, the most you can increase cannons is 7 (not counting any progress tiles or spending gold). In the later rounds, you typically need more than 7 cannons to fight. So it may not be worth it to waste actions on something you can’t win.
But if 6 or less come out, you have the chance of going up several points this round and then several more points before the round ends and the Pirate threat is realized.
Knowing what cubes are out of the tower can be beneficial in mitigating the randomness of the cube drop.
There have been reports that some of the cube towers were assembled incorrectly. Each “floor” of the tower is labelled either A or B. The colors should also match against the walls. So the printing for B should be face down and align with the lowest floor of the tower.
On the other hand, if you find too many cubes being restricted, try flipping over one of the floors to allow more direct clear space. Switching A and B will also give a different distribution of cubes falling through.
