I played Lagoon: Legend of Druids today with a random stranger and the creator.
It was really nice to be explained the rules after trying to read them online. They didn’t click until it was explained to me and I had a reference sheet next to me.
I’m get this out of the way: the art. Ajklhaflsur.
Prototype components were all wooden about 3mm thick. They felt good, easy to pick up. Actual game will have Cardboard parts, but thickness should be the same or thicker.
Starting with 2 druids per player on 3 hexes, players control their Druids and Eldrid (more powerful/lead druid) throughout Lagoon, moving and exploring new lands, Summoning other druids into play (up to 5 per player), or invoking site abilities to create desired effects. Tiles can also be unraveled to change the destiny of Lagoon and bring points. Gameplay goes until all hex tiles have been drawn.
A few of the interesting things that came up in playtesting:
-Cards are to be read as simply as possible, no need to overcomplicate things.
-Energies produce certain effects. Blue tend to shift site locations and Druids, Red tend to move druids up spaces, and yellow is more about refreshing druids. Not a complete list of possible effects, but a trend.
-To determine destiny: when the final tile is drawn and explored, game ends, game is over. Energy with the most amount of tiles becomes the destiny. Seeds of the destiny’s color that you helped play into the world get 1 pt, unraveling sites of destiny color give 0 pts, and unraveling sites not matching destiny give 2 pts each.
-One decides who goes first by answering the following, “who’s the last player to visit a forest?”
-Define exploring- we came to the conclusion that exploring is defined as drawing a tile from the bag.
In the postgame discussion with the other player and David, the creator, one thing that surprised me about the game once he mentioned it was that this is not a violent game. No attacking or killing critters… Video and board games alike, i can think of very few games that dont require brute force. I see this as making the game very friendly for kids if they are bright enough to figure out the learning curve. Rules sound simple, but a few particulars like needing to have 3 site powers of a certain color AND have a refeshed druid ontop of it to unravel. It takes forethought or comboing. I really enjoyed myself. I think you will too.
Finally got up the courage to break out Dark Darker Darkest. Our first session lasted about four hours with set up and all of the rule checking. It was fun; I’m interested to see how it plays next time now that we know what we’re doing. If anyone here has played it before, I’d definitely welcome any advice, tips, or experiences.
It was a surprisingly gaming weekend: skyline, star trek fleet captains, chess, gipf, yinsh, la boca, ricochet robots, Cold War: Cia x KGB and Sentinels of Multiverse.
Great gaming weekend although it got cut a day short because of car repair taking 2 days more than planned (this due to them breaking another part while fixing the one intended…)
Robinson *2
Pathfinder ACG
Resistance: Avalon *4
One night ultimate werewolf *3
Amerigo
Escape *2
Las Vegas
Battlestar Galactica with parts of all expansions
Talisman 2ed.
Russian Railroad
Galaxy Trucker with both expansions
Was hoping to get in at least a couple of games of Hike this afternoon with the family, but everyone had to leave too soon. So it’s Catan on my phone during the Closing Ceremonies.
I had a really good weekend of gaming, mostly due to assorted visitors coming to play with my daughter and I, but I got a bit of grown-up gaming on Saturday evening too.
So, games played were (deep breath in)… Eco Fluxx, Castle Panic, Secrets of the Deep, Sleeping Queens, Gubs, Love Letter, Mutant Meeples, Apples to Apples, Augustus, Giro Galoppo, Ticket to Ride, K2, Fleet, and Assault on Hoth. Not bad. 🙂
Hosted the college kids at the church. Played some they knew already: Avalaon (of course), Tsuro, and Tier auf Tier. But introduced them to some “new” ones too: Carcassonne, Bohnanza, Transamerica, Sentinels of the Multiverse, and Mascarade.
Finally got to give Caverna a try. And, as I expected, I LOVED IT! A possible new favorite and was enjoyable with 6 players (it didn’t hurt that I won by 1 point). And even though the pieces are all nice quality, I couldn’t help but think about using HeroClix for your dwarven family. 🙂
Just moved to a brand new place and all my games are packed up at the moment. Tonight I’ll be bringing home the Boss Monster Tools of Hero Kind expansion, Poo the card game, and Ladies and Gentlemen from work. Hopefully I’ll get to give Poo a try. I really enjoy Nuts, so here’s hoping Poo is as fun.
If things work out, we’ll be playing Battlestar Galactica tonight for the first time with friends. I’m also looking forward to some quick Timeline matches.
Busy weekend doing chores, so not sure what will get played. Good chance it will be Trains (big hit right now), and probably some Lost Cities with the wife.
We have scheduled for today to take out, after stored from a long time, Le Havre. Also we will play Quarriors which some colleagues still have not tried it, Blood bowl manager to check its expansion, and i will introduce also Runeage.
Got in some Rampage, Suburbia, and Coup

Played Pandemic with the wife for the first time. We loved it!
Monthly game event featured Shadows over Camelot and Game of Thrones: The Board Game.
Castellan with each of my daughters.
Solo Snowdonia and Suburbia to learn them better before teaching.
Also been reading the Robinson Crusoe rules to get a head start on them before trying it out in a couple weeks perhaps.
Edit: To add Suburbia and Colossal Arena being played on Monday.

We’re just about to play Firefly for the first time. My husband is setting it up as I type this.
If things work out, we’ll be playing Battlestar Galactica tonight for the first time with friends. I’m also looking forward to some quick Timeline matches.
My wife and I are playing our first go at Firefly the Game.
Busy weekend doing chores, so not sure what will get played. Good chance it will be Trains (big hit right now), and probably some Lost Cities with the wife.
We just got City of Iron, so we’ve been bouncing back and forth between it and Bruges this weekend. Squeezing in some Lords of Waterdeep too.
Quiet gaming weekend with the gf so most likely some smallworld: underground, ticket to ride and the witches, a fav of hers 😉
