What’s fun about the chip tossing is that it can be mastered! You might consider letting everyone take a few practice tosses with their chips before each game, especially if someone’s never played before.
Gripping the chip
I prefer holding the chip from above almost as if you were sliding the chip. You can also grip the chip like you would if you were to toss a card or throw a frisbee. Just don’t throw very hard!
Banking and bumping
Just like balls in the game of billiards, how your chip hits other chips and the board edge will affect it’s direction of movement. A skilled throw can not only bump other chips off a space but also put your chip right where you want it!
It’s very important to watch what spices other players are buying. A blend can be completed in just one round if a player gets all their chips in the right spaces. Tossing your chip to knock another player’s chip off a spice bowl can be just as important as trying to get your chips where you want them.
If players are focused on what they need to do to win, and/or what players other than you are doing, they will be less inclined to try and bump your chips out of the spaces. Then all you need are three good tosses and the right amount of money to complete an entire blend in just one round.
One of the most effective ways of doing this is by being vocal! If you see a player with chips in spaces that would complete a blend, let another player know, and suggest they bump that person’s chip. Also, don’t say things like “Oooo, I’ve got all my chips where they need to be!” This will certainly make you an instant target!
This might not be your style, but it can be very effective.
Sometimes buying exactly what you want at the moment isn’t as important as just getting a lot of every thing else. Obtaining a spice earlier in the game that sells for more later on could make others available.
Likewise, putting all your money towards one spice could affect you for longer than you suspect.
This game is definitely one of finance.
