What are you playing to bring in the new year?

Posted by Jim {Power Gamer} | 30-Dec-11 | 34 comments

Hopefully your holiday season has been full of family, fun and great gaming!

2011 has been an amazing year for board games. There have been so many great releases that have become new favorites. 2012 is looking to be just as, if not even more promising!

What game will you be playing to bring in the new year, and what game set to release in 2012 is highest on your anticipation list?

I hope to play Pandemic for the first time over the holiday week-end, along with Forbidden Island, and if I can convince the friends we’re playing with, I’ll get in a game of Battlestar Galactica. I also anticipate playing the Lord of the Rings LCG. I’ve been having a lot of fun working through the quests solo.

My most anticipated games would be the Kazzad-dum expansion for Lord of the Rings, as well the Star Wars LCG and X-Wing. Can’t wait!

Looking like some games of Pandemic w/ On the Brink, Power Grid, Peurto Rico (got the collectors edition for Christmas) and probably some 7 Wonders.

Looks like it we’ll be playing Wits ‘n Wagers (gave to my mom for Christmas) and Dixit (got it from her for Christmas) and probably some more Ticket to Ride. Oh yeah, bookwyrmm, good chance for some Word on the Street too.

Will probably play some party games on New Year’s. Maybe Word on the Street or Cineplexity.

I will be playing Magic (Commander format), and probably The Rersistance. A friend is having a gaming party and those are the ones I can count on.

Malifaux. (Can you guess I love this game?) Maybe some Fluxx, or Muchkin. Depends on what everyone else wants but Malifaux for certain.

I plan a nice game New Year party. Some Caylus for sure, Quarriors for a break… We shall see, what else. 😉

For the rest of the year I have no exact plans.

I’ve just closed a deal to pick up a bunch of games on my wishlist for huge discounted almost-new lot. So the local Game Group will have some new stuff to get on the table in the coming weeks! Only thing a really need more of is TIME. (Okay – more money would be handy, too.)

Any recommendations?

I’m going to try more straight-up Euro games in 2012. I’ve avoided them, claiming that I don’t like resource games. I avoided Carcassonne. Now I love it. Same with Dominion. Same with 7 Wonders. The one that shocked me most is Macao. I wouldn’t have guessed how much I enjoy it.

Just received Ninja: Legend of the Scorpion Clan. Will most likely try some games of that over the New Year weekend. Rules seem a little confusing, but like always, play to learn, right?

Jon, Greg and I went through all the quests so far in The Lord of the Rings: The Card game LCG over the holidays! It was an epic journey. One of Jon’s heroes was Gimli, and one of mine was Legolas, so we made sure to tally up their kills throughout the quests. We never did come to an agreement of which hero actually got the most 🙂

So the future expansions and adventure packs for the LOTR LCG is highest on my anticipation list for 2012!
