I was just visiting my parents, and they wanted me to take some games off their hands that they had kept over the years. It was quite nostalgic. Some of our favorites growing up were Hotels, Huggermugger, Pathfinder (not the RPG… It was more like Battleship), and Payday. Our ultimate favorite, which unfortunately was sold years ago in a garage sale was called Dark Tower.
Are you trying out any new games, or pulling out your tried and true favorites?
Quarriors x3, Sekigahara: Unification of Japan, Twilight Struggle and 1812 The Invasion of Canada. Of these I was only able to log plays of Quarriors and Twilight Struggle here.
If I’m lucky, I’ll be getting in a game of ‘Side Meier’s Civilisation: The Boardgame’, by Eagle Games. Fantastic stuff on the hard rules!
Got the DnD group together for another adventure session. It was great, everyone had a good time even though two people couldn’t make it. (party of 8, so 6 was still a good size group). After most had gone home, my brother and best friend hung around and we broke out Heroscape. My best friend hadn’t played before but quickly learned the power of the 4th Mass! He’s officially hooked.
I had a good time with my local game shop. It was the first time & Im glad I gave it a try. We played a few games I never even heard of, one wasnt even in English, but it was fun. I even won one, but wonder if the head guy wasnt trying very hard. Id go back & suggest others give it a try for their local shop.
@Morlimar
I agree that it can be very difficult to truly enjoy a game if the rule book is poorly written. My favourite types of rule books are the ones where you get the basic information up front so you can follow the outline of steps to actually start playing the game right away. Clear, concise layout is a highly desirable trait.
So far this weekend I have played three games of Smallworld, which my brother got for his birthday. None of us had ever played before, but overall it was fairly straightforward, I think. I definitely want to investigate the other expansions to it.
Not sure what other games, if any, I will be playing this weekend.
@ Corey
Thanks for the Wiz-War review. A very good one – as I deem a well written rule book paramount to a game’s enjoyment. (Not to mention the fact to learn the game.) Sorry it didn’t turn out to be what you had hoped.
I appreciate your take on the game. I was considering picking this up, but now I think not. I will learn it if it is offered at game group.
I feel like sometimes, designers and publishers sometimes offer “too much” of their expertise when presenting rules and game descriptions – as though we need to acknowledge them as artists as will as a manufacturer. The result is a convoluted rule book that doesn’t do what it is supposed to do – let the players begin to play!
Anyone else?
Scrabble with the 9 year old. And she got over 200 points! With only a moderate amount of help!
No big plans for gaming, played some more Nightfall last night and that is a current favorite. Was looking forward to trying out Miskatonic.
This weekend I plan on playing Princes of Florence, Gonzaga, and Hornet. Plus whatever else hits the table.
I’ll be playing some Miskatonic School for Girls like Stephanie, and maybe my new copy of Pamplona – Viva San Fermín! I think my copy of Feudality won’t be here until sometime next week. 🙁
The local boardgaming club has its big monthly meetup this Sunday. I’m sure I’ll play lots of different games, but in particular I hope to teach people my newly-published game Destined Hero, which just came out yesterday.
Miskatonic School for Girls! I was a Kickstarter backer, and my copy arrived last night. Can’t WAIT to play it!
“Bang!” should arrive tomorrow and I’m looking forward to giving that a try. Should be having a group over so that, 7 Wonders, and The Resistance are essentially sure things to accomodate everyone.
Toc Toc Woodman. I ordered it and it should be arriving Saturday. My gaming group will be getting together that night. It should be fun for those time in between other games.
I always end up playing The Resistance whether I intend to or not. It is usually saved until last call in our gaming evenings. Besides that, I just want to have a whole bunch of short (less than 30 minute) games.
Not sure I’ll get much gaming in this weekend. I’m hoping to play Modern Art, Ticket to Ride, or Dixit with folks coming over for dinner.
@Andy: I used to use this site.. http://www.darktowerparts.com/ They may be worth contacting although I don’t see any bulbs. 🙁
Got the new Penny Arcade DBG, and some more Star Trek DBG – Borg Scenario. Yipe! IS resistance futile??
I hope to bring Wiz-War to the table. Like the games you mentioned, it’s a game from my youth. I have the new FF version, and I can’t wait to break it in.
We really like Survive when we were young. I was thrilled to pick up the new version with its much-improved components. We still take down the original version when we visit my parents.
I’ve been invited to a Battletech (another blast from the past) session on Saturday.
Jim,
Your comment has me thinking about finally trying to disect my copy of Dark Tower and seeing if I can get the motor working (anyone know where lightbulbs for Dark Tower can be found???)
Maybe this is the weekend Power Grid: Robots finally finds its way to the table.
Tonight I will be making my first trip to the local game store’s game night to play with a bunch of people Ive never met and hopefully a few games Ive never played. The gf is going with me as well, which I think should be interesting, she usually plays for blood.
