This Week’s Explorable Games
This round of Explorable Favorites is from BoardGaming.com’s most played games list. The games selected were:
- Magic: The Gathering
Wizards of the Coast | Published: 1993 - Krosmaster: Arena
Japanime Games | Published: 2013
These games will be explorable until next Tuesday, October 28th.
After you’ve explored these games, let us know what you think about them in the comments below!
So are these only happening once a month now?
Both of these have caught my eye before and I’ve been tempted many times by friends lately to jump into MtG. I appreciate what both games have to offer, but I find myself keeping them at arms’ length simply due to budgetary constraints. I know myself too well and know that I would not be satisfied with just the base game of Krosmaster: Arena or a starting deck in MtG. Until I find myself with money to burn, I will content myself with drooling and pining from afar for these games. I hope to find a way to play both soon, if nothing more than to find out their appeal.
B&B’s got it right! Magic really can be a great game to play just for fun. One format I wish I’d gotten into is the Cube Draft – somebody deliberately assembles a draftable set to play with. Nobody winds up out in the cold for not dropping hundreds on a deck. Instead, you get together, have some fun and then disassemble the decks so they can go into a different Cube. Neato stuff!
I am a bottom-feeder when it comes to MTG. I buy old cards cheap, like overstock from my LGS or a reasonably priced bundle on Craigslist. As a result, you won’t be seeing me at any tournaments or playing for money, but there is fun to be had with the game without spending absolutely obscene money. For example, I often got boxes of 600 cards for $5.00 at my LGS, and got a few boxes of 2500 for $20 a piece once off Craigslist. Then you just use your collection to play with friends and family.
@Bit and Bot I call them as I see them 🙂 In reading through the listed reviews of MtG (and @Kassidy’s fresh review with a Medal Faerie radar title) the common thread was: Bring Cash! Luckily, I somehow dodged the CCG gene (although my recent purchase of Adventure Time makes me twitchy) and The Boy still dabbles but is happier with the idea of LCG and more self-contained crack and less searching hither and yon.
But those Smiling Plastic Chibis do look awesome. Especially if you have a schmancy carrying case for them. Japanime really hit the nail of Skylanders for Tabletoppers on the head. (I guess until the real thing takes off – with Golem Arcana)
I dodged the addiction but Krosmaster is a fun little outing. It’s very pretty and the closest thing to a MOBA like League of Legends in non-digital dice-fancier tactile form I know. I can see why it is logged so much here.
With two Arena sets, a kiddie-friendly Junior version, the upcoming Quest game, and 100+ smurfin’ minis to KrosCatch – it is easy enough to find that shadowy corner table in your FLGS with the guy who whispers ‘Hey man – you want to Kros’ as you walk by.
That Smiling Plastic Chibi Crack looks so awesome!
As for MTG, I spend way more time organizing my cards than I ever do playing it.
(Thanks for that Hai. Good to start the day with a laugh)
Krosmaster is our new daughter/father best game and will hit the table a lot in the next weeks.
I did my part and added a review….need 1 more review to be fully explorable
I’m a retired Magic player. Played through the ’90’s into the 2000’s. Still a great game.
Krosmaster Arena looks awesome! Reminds me of Mage Wars, but the playing pieces are 3-D and it plays quicker. Have to try this one out!
Hmm, MtG, Think I heard that name somewhere.
Jokes aside- excited to learn about Postmaster, always wondered why it’s so highly rated on this site.
Yay! Explorable Favorites!!! Cash Draining Edition!
Cardboard Crack vs Smiling Plastic Chibi Crack
Fascinating. I have never seen or heard of Krosmaster until just now. It must have dense pockets of fandom in other cities, but not here.
@Urosh and @Jeff W. – It is with a hung head that I have to admit to being one of those members of the Krosmaster Kult who couldn’t be bothered to write a review. Just in case I don’t get the chance to do an actual review before it loses explorability, here are the top things that come to mind when I think Krosmaster: Arena…
Beautiful! Quality components! Amazing rulebook tutorials! I want more maps! Modular mechanics that let you make the game as complex as you want! Too expensive! (I honestly wouldn’t have ever bought it if I hadn’t got it on sale. On the other hand, it’s worth hunting down an affordable copy!)
Yeah, I agree. I hadn’t realized Krosmaster was played so much, and I was not surprised with only two reviews.
But maybe we can get some of these players to stop playing and review it? 🙂
For as much as it apparently gets played, Krosmaster is going to need a few more reviews to be remotely explorable.
