This Week’s Explorable Games
This round of Explorable Favorites is from BoardGaming.com member Betty. The two games selected from their favorites shelf were:
These games will be explorable until next Monday, April 21st.
After you’ve explored these games, let us know what you think about them in the comments below!
Fleet’s not really my style, but I’ll definitely give it a shot if someone has a copy to play. I’m not big on the theme, to be honest. I’d go with Key Largo any day, as diving for sunken treasures amid sea monsters sounds more exciting than catching and processing fish.
Trains is right up my rail, so to speak. I really like Dominion, but I’m not too keen on games that I consider to be completely devoid of theme. Train has it and more, from the reviews I’ve read. It’s going on the wish list!
This set is a good example of why I like “explorable” games. I had discounted “Trains” as a game I wouldn’t like but after looking into it more I need to go out and give it a try.
Trains looks like a game for people who love Dominion and Ticket to Ride. I’ve been wanting to try it out.
Fleet is probably more of a family game than my gaming group would probably enjoy. I can’t say I’d enjoy the theme.
Fleet is a more accessible card game with mechanics similar to Race for the Galaxy. Very nice quality.
Trains surprised me with how easy it was to learn and play. I now prefer the deck-builders with a board game – it’s spoiled me!
@hai, that’s cool. I hope you get a chance to get Trains and play it. I may have to talk AEG about a new tag line for their expansion coming up;-)
Account Deletion,
Unfortunately, the evening I was scheduled to play Fleet I had to cancel attending, and have not gotten around to playing it since. I can ask around my group and if anyone has some thoughts to pass along, I’ll post them here.
@JAY Your review words are what sold me – and a long history with AEG
But your son’s tag line – they should put that on the box! 😉
I’d like to see some more reviews of Fleet. It looks intriguing, and neither of the game libraries I visit has it. I’d like to get a better feel…might have to try it out at Gen Con (so…far…away…gasp!).
Trains looks fantastic, but I’m not sure I can talk myself into the price. I expect some awesome components for that kind of nut.
You can tell by my review, I think Trains is awesome. My son said after his first play, “It’s the feeling I get on my birthday!”. This is coming from my little sentinels fan.
@Andy – my pleasure. Out of curiosity, have you played Fleet? I’m leaning toward backing Eggs and Empires, but all I know of these designers came from the two reviews posted here. Any additional insight from one of our resident über-gamers would be welcome.
Superficially, the theme of Eggs and Empires appeals to me more than Fleet.
Total coincidence!
Account Deletion,
Thanks for the link to that Kickstarter. I can’t believe how much my opinion of a Kickstarter improves based on how easy it is to read and understand the pledge levels without having to jump all over the page. Eggs and Empires did a good job.
Wow, what a coincidence. I turned down demos of both of these games, at different cons but both because it was well past lunch time and I needed food. And here they show up as explorable. I never regret skipping a game for sleep or food, but both of these look like great games.
Highly coincidental (or is it?) timing: the follow-up from the designers of Fleet launched on Kickstarter this morning. For fans of Fleet or anybody else interested, here’s the link:
Eggs and Empires
[update] Just added rules links for Fleet and Trains!
@TheGordonShow 3 reviews, tip, hourglass, video, rules, web page, back dated play, and follow (even temporarily) and you’ve got it! 😉
Trains intrigues – looking for an industrial deckbuilder and this seems much better than Briefcase.
To the Wish List!
Just tried Trains this last weekend! I’m submitting a review. Unfortunately, I can’t vote for my own review so I can’t complete the Explore!!
These are two games I’ve enjoyed playing, but do not own. Reading about them makes me want them. I think my family would enjoy Trains a lot.
Here’s a link to the rules for Fleet…
Highly recommend Trains — writing a review for it right after last year’s GenCon was what prompted me to join BG.com.
