This Week’s Explorable Games
This round of Explorable Favorites is from BoardGaming.com member Diogenes. The games selected from their Favorites shelf were:
- Diplomacy
Avalon Hill, Hasbro, Wizards of the Coast | Published: 1959 - Catan: Cities & Knights
Mayfair Games | Published: 1998
These games will be explorable until next Monday, April 27th
After you’ve explored these games, let us know what you think about them in the comments below!
I played Diplomacy years ago and found it too complicated to learn for a beginner however I know many people who like the game.
I Own all of the Settlers of Catan Board Games and Expansions and like them all.
@Stratagon We received the paper craft edition as a gift, but I inherited the old Avalon Hill edition from my Poppa. When preparing for our one fateful game, we noticed that one of the long wooden blocks used as a ship had a bite mark in it.
I think that says it all.
@Hai I totally agree with that assessment. I have Fallen Empires tokens that I got free from a copy of The Duelist that look better than the components in my 50th Anniversary edition (which remains unplayed/unpunched). Underwhelming components, overwhelming rules and the fact that I am trying to grow my gaming group got this one permanently shelved. I would still love to try it, but am terrified of the results it would have with my friends.
I’ve played Diplomacy once…ONCE! Mostly because the gamers I know are not gamers you want to play Diplomacy with.
For all the history and lineage, PBM following to this day, and deftly ironic titling it has, I am glad Cashflo ™ pulled out all the stops for the 50th Anniversary and created the most looks-like-it-was-made-in-the-back-room-of-a-Staples version possible. 🙁 After the classic wooden blocks of the Avalon Hill Bookcaser and the overindulgent big box Ghost of Avalon Hill edition with metal pieces it is no way to respect your elders.
I have only played the Cities & Knights expansion once, and that with the Seafarers expansion, too. Having had only ever played basic Catan, the addition of so many layers and components was too much all at once. I would love to sit down to Cities & Knights on its own sometime: after one play and exploring it, I feel like this is the Catan expansion I am looking for.
@Hai- Hahaha!!!!
Wow! Diplomacy was first published in 1959! How many games on this site are more than 56 years old..? Nice job Diogenes.
Oh, I always forget about that filter…
I still remember my last game of Diplomacy when I backsatbbed a friend when he sure as **** didn’t expect it with me as Austria and him as Turkey 🙂
Never finished that game but it looked good for me after eliminating Italy after 1,5 years and having a great ally in France.
A bit weird that another friend of mine mentioned Diplomacy this weekend wanting to get a game started because it is one of his unplayed games.
Oh, the old classic Diplomacy! But indeed, @Granny, is does not come for free.
Finally! Rosetta Stone Unlocked!!! WOOOOOOO!
Oh and Congrats to @Diogenes for being the Sacred Shelf Spotlight…blah blah blah….
ROSETTA STONE BABY!!!!
Congratulations, Diogenes!
Wow, I never realized that Diplomacy was 50+ years old – judging by the references I heard it was a modern game! Look forward to learning more about it.
Diogenes,
Congrats on landing the favoured seat this week. Your comment about Diplomacy is hilarious. Definitely a game not to play with an angry gamer.
Diplomacy is probably the best game I know, but you have to remember the first rule: What happens in Diplomacy, stays in Diplomacy. Otherwise you might indeed lose friends.
Thanks for all the likes!
Diplomacy…for when you have too many friends.
