There were so many great games that came out last year. They weren’t all just from the big publishers either. Many independent developers released some amazing games.

Good answers!!
I want to say Lord of the Rings: The Card Game, but as I started playing that in 2012 I will stick with Blood Bowl: Team Manager – The Card Game, a real treat!
Quarriors wins the top of the 2011 for my list… but their were so many great games! A Few Acres of Snow, Blood Bowl Team Manager, Letters from White Chapel, Mansions of Madness, Kingdom Builder… the list is probably huge. I can never remember when something came out – I would have to go back and look so more.
I have to say, that my favorite new game of the year is A Few Acres of Snow. I love that game. I’m horrible at it, but I love it. Too bad there is no way to get a 4-6 player version of it. Awesome intellectual game. I highly recommend it.
Also, my favorite game right now is Ticket to Ride: India, but its an expansion (and might have come out in January….) so I’m not sure it counts.
I’d have to say Mansions of Madness. It was always a requested game to play, we had a grand time laughing at some of the scnearios, envisioning what was happening and I really enjoyed being able to dictate the difficulty of the game when playing the keeper.
For 2011 games I have really loved Discworld: Ankh-Morpork!
Definitely Winsome Games’ South African Railroads. It’s explained in only a couple pages of rules and plays in a relatively short time (well, on the order of 70 minutes), yet presents some delightfully difficult decisions to the players.
Second is probably Vanuatu. Lovely whimsical art; cool gameplay; I had to order a copy immediately after play.
Third is probably a tie between Colonial: Europe’s Empires Overseas and Mage Knight. The former is a freewheeling economic/conflict game on the world stage; the latter a excellent slightly-abstracted adventure. Either way, they’re good for hours of enjoyable gameplay.
The Summoner Wars Master Set.
Axis & Allies Global 1940 – Combination of AAp40 and AAE40 into one GIANT Game.
My top for 2011 had to be Star Trek Fleet Captains. We have quite a few Trek fans in our group so this hit the table a lot.
Mine would have to be Carson City (although I can’t remember if it was published in 2011 or if it just took me until then to get to play it). An Honourable Mention goes out to The Lord of the Rings card game.
I was going to suggest sorting the games list on here by date, but that sorts it by the date it was added to the database rather than date of release.
Can we request that if it wouldn’t be too difficult an addition? An option to sort the games list by release date?
Is there a list of all the games that came out last year that I could look over before answering this question?
Thank you in advance.
Tough to pick just one. The game that seems to hit the table the most is King of Tokyo, and we have a really fun time with it.
Honorable mentions would be A Few Acres of Snow and Eminent Domain.
I jumped into the board gaming hobby halfway into 2011, so I think this answer will change as I play more games released last year, but Mage Knight is currently my favorite. I feel like I have barely scratched the surface of that game and am eager to delve deeper.
I have not yet been able to get them to the table, but I can see Eclipse, Letters from Whitechapel or Ora et Labora sliding into the top spot in the future.
Like ScottB, Omen and Risk Legacy are easy picks for top two. I have to give the slight edge to Risk Legacy though because of the massively cool innovations it packs in. Nearly every gamer I know bought a copy whether someone in their group already had it or not. Omen might have edged out Risk Legacy if I already had my hands on the 2nd edition since then I’d be able to play it as more than just a two player game.
And even beyond those there were so many great, fun games that came out last year – Battleship Galaxies, more Summoner Wars, Quarriors, Bloodbowl Team Manager, more Race for the Galaxy, etc…
Great year for the hobby.
My Top Games of 2011:
1)Mage knight
2)A few acres of snow
3)Lord of the rings LCG
For me it was “Quarriors!” which is a little bit strange as it’s clearly not a game with power gamers as their target. But it is so funny that I really like it and I play it when I want something entertaining and almost mindless. 😉
Star Trek deck building game is one of my favs from the last year. I don’t know why I don’t play it far more often.
The 2011 game I keep coming back to is The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game. As runner up, my wife and I have really enjoyed Quarriors.
