What are you playing this weekend? (Jan 17, 2019)

We have plans to see friends this weekend, and more snow may be coming, so it’s hard to say what we will be doing this weekend. I am not sure if we will have time, but maybe we can get in a game of Timeline Discoveries this weekend. We played that over the holidays and I forgot how much fun it can be.

What are you playing this weekend?

@Stargazer1 Thanks! And I will definitely keep a semi-open mind. I know we have talked about AH and EH in the past. It is good to hear from someone with the same frame of reference as me though (Eldritch Horror is in my top five). I think I may have to pick up a copy of AH2ed while it is still attainable, my love for Lovecraft runs to deep.

@ B. Chereaux Yes, I have played Arkham Horror 3rd Edition(AH3e). I liked the game. It has a good mix of Mansions of Madness, Arkham Horror 2nd edition(AH2e) and Arkham Horror, LCG elements. My one and only play was fun. However, AH3e has problems. For one, game length is very long, longer than AH2e. Two, the rulebook was awful, not clear at all. Three, I’m not convinced that the scenarios are very replayable. Sure, there are many different investigators to chose from, but once you know the nuances of the scenarios, you can avoid the bad twists and turns. The game becomes less fun and more of a puzzle. I’ll stick with AH2e any day, and won’t be purchasing AH3e. Take my opinion with a grain of salt though, as AH2e is probably my favorite game of all time.

Stargazer1, Have you played the new edition of Arkham Horror, and what do you think about it? I am trying to decide if I should pick up a copy of the older edition while it can still be had.

A big snowstorm kept us hunkered down most of the weekend. Played Arkham Horror w/expansions on Friday night. And many solo games of Lord of the Rings, LCG on Saturday and Sunday.

I have played Gearworks a few times, and just finished a two player game of Thebes, all by myself.

Didn’t have the time I wanted so only got in Artifacts Inc. and Architects of the West Kingdom.

Artifacts Inc. is a dice placement game I haven’t gotten to play in a couple years. Pretty good game but the time between turns can be long for a simple roll and allocate game. Still it packs small for a game that plays big so I won’t cull it from my collection (for now).

Architects of the West Kingdom is a unique worker placement where you just keep placing workers causing spaces you use repeatedly to become more and more powerful, but with a press your luck element where someone can capture all the workers you put on a space if you get too many there and then they sell them into a prison where you either have to pay to get them out or take a huge rep hit to get them out and return them to your worker pool. I like that it manages to do something different with the WP mechanic. The fact that it is made by Renegade, a company I legit respect for their above and beyond customer service, is a bonus for me and I will be grabbing my own copy soon
