This Week’s Explorable Games
This round of Explorable Favorites is from BoardGaming.com member Marvin K. The two games selected from their favorites shelf were:
These games will be explorable until next Monday, March 24th.
After you’ve explored these games, let us know what you think about them in the comments below!
I’ve never played Tichu, but now I’ll have to take a look. I love Kingsburg, even without the expansion. I haven’t played it in a while, so I’ll have to dig it back out and give it another turn on the table.
I’ve always been curious about Kingsburg, I guess that’s a sign!
I asked a friend to describe why he liked Kingsburg, because he typically likes much deeper games. I think his favorite game is the Android Board game (not to be confused with Netrunner) because he likes the complexity.
This is what he said about Kingsburg (w/expansion) when I asked him why he liked it: “Be…cause it’s fun? With dice placing, you have opportunities to screw the other players, and there is more than one way to win. Also, did I mention that it’s fun?”
Kingsburg is good for introducing new players, but only replay value is with the expansions. A rarity as I can’t think of any other game where I won’t play it without the expansion (Race for the Galaxy comes close & Game of Thrones v.1 would have qualified).
Tichu sounds like the sort of game I could teach to non-tabletop gamers in the family, being based on classic card games.
Some might find this sacrilegious, but I found Kingsburg to be like a watered-down Dungeon Lords. Many of the resource management elements are present, along with the seasonal timer. Dungeon Lords removes some of the randomness for resource gathering.
That said, I enjoyed Kingsburg, but, given a choice between the two to play, I would take Dungeon Lords.
I’m always hoping someone will bring Kingsburg to the game store. It looks fun, but I’m unlikely to buy it without trying it first. I find worker placement games to be very hit or miss for me. I usually like them, but find the theme lacking, or they have good theme, but the worker placement aspect is too wonky. Dunno. I think I’m overly difficult to please in that category.
These are two games that are not in my top 10… but I would happily play them anytime. They are both medium light games that can be played with non-gamers.
I love Tichu and it could be my most played game ever with most of them with the same 3 people.
Kingsburg is a game I enjoy IF the expansion is included. The expansion really is a must in my book.
I had looked at Kingsburg before, but now I might have to explore it a little deeper and see what is inside the box.
Nice selection Marvin K..
Tichu looks interesting, but not sure if its for me…
Kingsbury has been on my wanted list for a while..
Jammerdad
Thanks Marvin K for making me awar of these to games. I am not sure Tichu is a game for me but I will keep an eye out for Kingsburg!
Couple of really nice games. In particular, Kingsburg (and it’s essential expansion) have been one of our groups’ favorite games. I know other types of gamers can take or leave it, but it really gels with our group.
Tichu is another “classic” card game in that it feels a bit like other similar games, but that doesn’t diminish its value in anyway…if you’re a fan of “classic” style card games.
Gamer Bling keeps hearing about these. Perhaps he will indeed have to explore them…
