Ah, great reminder to pick up City of Iron as I backed the expansion on Kickstarter 🙂
I totally forgot about City of Iron when it was on KS. It was on my watch list, and then it was funded and I missed out. I’d gladly trade it for one of the games I shouldn’t have supported. 🙂
I still thoroughly enjoy City of Iron, but Terra Mystica is fastly becoming my favorite game. Like @Kaleb, I’ve been meaning to review it for over a month… but May/June/July is my company’s annual audit (which I’m in charge of), so it also becomes my annual hiatus from Boardgaming.com.
The game is truly amazing. It’s so beautiful and thematic for a hardcore Euro. And despite the somewhat daunting looking rulebook and volume of bits and pieces, I found it surprisingly easy to get into and understand. Players suffering from AP could really drag the game out, but otherwise I’ve found no fault in it. It is probably my “favorite game 1b” to Sentinels of the Multiverse‘s “1a”
I really enjoyed the excuse to look at both these games in a little more depth. I bought Terra Mystica this year and have played it in introductory mode only a couple of times. Reading the reviews and looking at the tips and videos have re-inspired me to get back to this truly beautiful game and play a less structured game. A great friend of mine introduced me to City of Iron this weekend past! Fabulous – how easy it was to get in and ‘get the hands dirty’ and how much fun to see how many different directions it can go in 🙂 Thanks for a fun explore this week 😀
TWIMC,
Will there be GenCon Demo-ing available for Explorable Credit this year?
That section of this site seems to still be from GenCon 2012…
🙁
Terra Mystica is one of my favorites! I have a partial review written – oh well.
Nice, I’ve been meaning to learn more about Terra Mystica for a while now! Look forward to exploring that one.
I really wanted to like Terra Mystica. I read up on it and thought the mechanics sounded interesting. But it completely fell flat for me when I played it. The theme did not come through for me at all, and the mechanics were disappointing. It felt like a soulless cube pusher to me.
City of Iron looks very good. I’m sold on this one! I don’t like deckbuilders, but it appears that the game isn’t centered on this mechanic. City of Iron has beautiful components too!
@garbled Congrats on stocking the BGdot Sacred Shelf this week! 🙂
City of Iron was a good add to our collection. I wouldn’t have been turned on to it if it wasn’t for the BGdot and the reviews of @garbled and @Account 🙂 Now I have to track down the expansion when it prints 🙂 Just a whisper of Euro-sourceyness so I don’t flip the table meets a deck builder most unconvetional.
Euros with fantasy and steampunk themes… huh? These game are both worth checking out. Terra Mystica is the heavier of the two, so if you are new to Euros… City of Iron would be my suggestion. I’m a big fan of Ryan Laukat designs.
