We’ve got a sitter for the kids tonight so that we could plan an Arkham Horror all-nighter mixing in various expansions. We’ve also been having a blast with Mars Attacks: Ten-Minute Takedown and hope to give Munchkin Steampunk Deluxe its first go after two failed attempts this week.
What are you playing this weekend?
@inmarg Yay! Happy to help! π Wiz-War suffers the same fate with me. I know it is something I would like and hovers about on my radar but always seems to get bumped by other dancing sugar plums. Thanks to Epic Gaming Day Quiz I did official put it on my Birthday Wishlist right next to YEDO. I will not let this one slip into the eternal sleep of Vamphyri Furiosa. I know that if it ever shows face on the annual FanFlight Winter is Coming Sale to make with the snatching post haste before it gets a Red Wedding.
@Stratagon My mental calendar is marked. I am preparing the best way to type HIVE. If only there were colors…
I will keep posting them here as we play! It all started when my perfectionist self was too lazy to enter all the html code to italicize my games. This has turned out to be more work overall, but also way more fun. Glad you guys are enjoying them! Next game day is scheduled for August 8th, so only a few more weeks…
I think Epic Game Day Quiz should become a regular feature of the site π
Took quite a few hints to get it.
Keep them comming, I enjoy these quizes.
@inmarg Well done! You are correct.
Wiz-War of course π
I was thinking threw every FFG game from the clues given by Hai. Havenæt played (or bought it). Considered it for a long time but it was always one of those items that get dropped from the cart.
@Stratagon It was an excellent quiz and a tough clue. On first impression it really could have been anything. It was that last impression that made me realize it could only be one thing. π
@Hai It is not looking good. Maybe I made it too difficult this month. Although the answer for 1) is only six letters and half of the answer is actually included in the clue! Surely, someone can break the code…
@Stratagon I think this is the most epic the Epic Game Day quiz has been! I wonder if 1) will fall before the next WAYPTW.
@Taxtu Correct! It really is a lot of fun, and more strategic than it originally appears.
Who will get #1? It has over 200 plays and 182 owners on this site, so I’m sure there has to be a current user who can figure it out…
Number 2) is Rampage, almost sure… i have seen it played by some friends, lot of fun!
For number 1) i am completely lost…
@Strats WOOO! Thank you for obliging the oblique. π
Hmmm…if I recall correctly scenario one has been breached. If you are donning the Vader helm prepare for the meta-game of Long Cold Night for the Imperials.
(And people deem Diplomacy a friend killer…)
Imperial Player Ninja Tip: Buying the pizza helps.
Nope, still can’t figure out neither 1 nor 2 π
@Hai Your oblique answers are correct! And you left room (and even more clues) for others to join in! The bake-lite buggies did not make an appearance this game day, but that is a solid guess (and observation).
As for the subtitle on 3, one of my Rebel players was quoted, “We would have made it, if it weren’t for those meddling extra tough consoles…” (I may have Scoobed that up a bit).
@DeadInkPen thank you for the recommendation. I don’t have Bang!:the Dice Game, but certainly gives me incentive to purchase it. I have the original card game, but didn’t feel I should bring an elimination game.
We played Machi Koro with the Harbor expansion, and they all picked it up quickly and really got into it.
Overall, had a “productive” board gaming weekend. Played Betrayal on House…, Machi Koro (with and without expansion), Roll for the Galaxy, Dutch Blitz, and Dead of Winter.
@Stratagon Late to the game waiting for you to post your quiz so I knew how to couch my awesome HIVE joke π
I knew 3 was Space Cadets the touchy-feely Star Bridge sim. Make it so!
And 4 was Imperial Insult:Attack of the 10 HP Consoles
I am going to answer the rest obliquely
1) Is a game that has had a long shelf life since original alliteration publication, has had as many incarnations as Dumbledore, and most recently was resurrected by a game company known for resurrecting and reskinning cult popular titles and then adding half-a-dozen expansions. Case in point: one furious guy in an opera cape.
2) A fairly recent game that got a title face lift due to dark stares from Bally Midway atop a skyscraper somewhere. There’s movie buzz, but I doubt Dwayne Johnson will be playing a meeple.
I didn’t really know what was down the Punchboard Highway this weekend. This week’s Explorable Xia put me in the mood for something spacey but both Xia and my choice for stardust sandboxer Phantom League required a certain group mindset we weren’t going to encounter. The hue and cry went out and someone brought Princess Ryan’s Star Marines from the days just before Avalon Hill got flattened. A strange hodge podge of a space serial pulp adventure I thoroughly enjoyed – it is a shame it is almost 20 years OOP RIP because finding it would be a Search for Spock.
The Boy nabbed a copy of 1st print Evolution for a primordial whale song as someone was tossing it for the revamped second coming. I have been having a surprisingly good time with it this week. The obvious cube juggling Euro aspect of it feels like a recessive gene beneath all the dominant trait ameritrashing. Notched two big group games on the bed post which made it even better as the mutations really start flying and tasty food chits become scarce.
Some help coordinating, organizing, and setting up my local comic shop’s Planeswalker Picnic potluck cookout and Magic tournament granted me a choice of a discounted game from their so-so collection. My choice: Tash-Kalar which I have always been curious about but probably would have never dampened toes on otherwise. Gave it a go with The Boy for some lazy Sunday afternoon gaming. Fun times – but about as close to an abstract as I’m going to get that isn’t shouting HIVE at the top of my lungs knowing it is an easy win for @Stratagon’s Epic Gaming Quiz.
…which this month it isn’t….
….it’s like he knew the joke was coming. *sigh*
3 is Space Cadets π
Fun, real time coop space adventure.
@ CaptM
3 – Those two have a few things in common with the actual game (sci-fi, co-op), but incorrect. Maybe @inmarg can help with this one?
4 – Correct! You hit the womprat right on the nose!
On Sunday I started on the third installment of Pathfinder:ACG with the couple who I’ve finished the first two with.
We agreed that we should probably get in a few other games in between this time…
