In Clash of Cultures, each player guides the cultural advancement of his civilization; beginning the game with one small settlement and one settler. With each turn, players must advance their cultures by gathering resources, expanding outward and growing their cities.
Choosing specific advancements in military, arts, sciences and spirituality increase your chance of survival – especially when the barbarians attack and catastrophic events occur. Players will strive to meet objectives, build wonders, use their armies to defend against attacks and build ships to promote trade. The player who has the most victory points after six rounds of play has succeeded in having their culture thrive. Like life itself, no two cultures will ever be the same…
I love civilization building games, must get this one too.
Great, the world is always in need of good civilization games, doesn’t matter if it is dice based (Roll Through the Ages), map based (Civilization) or card based (Through the Ages).
This game sounds so much like Sid Meier’s Civilization that it’s ridiculous (wonders, barbarians, different paths to victory, cities that produce adjacent resources based on their size, etc.)! And that’s a very good ridiculous, because I love Civilization.
I also love board games, so the marriage of the two seems an obvious choice for me, but the high price point paired with the fact that my roommate doesn’t share my enthusiasm for the prospect are keeping me away… for now.
@Morlimar Thanks for your take on Clash! I still didn’t get the game to the table. There was too much whining about the time commitment. I may have to scratch those numbers off the box. It’s not like it’s jury duty people!
Looks really interesting but sounds like lots of AP and in a Dragons Den Style… I’m out! 😛
Looks like a great game but hate, hate sitting round twiddling my thumbs waiting for other people who drag it out.
@Granny
The estimated play time is a bit off. First game for us was 3 hours with all new players. It moves fast.. Next game with 3 players was 2:45 or so.
Of course you can stare at the board as long as you like during your turn – which may extend the time for many groups… 😉
Sadly, it looks like this game may be out of stock and re-printing soon. I checked Z-Man Games’ site and the games is in a “COMING SOON” status, but it looks like you can place an order for one. It appears to be out of stock at other sites.
It also has a rather high price point for my taste $79.99 MSRP. Do I take the hit and pick this up when it becomes available or buy several other games/expansions at lower price points? Decisions, decisions…
Wow, very nice. I’m amazed that a game like this, which is right up my alley, can fly under my radar. This seems like a clear contender for gaming at least once a month.
I’ve got a copy since last November, but have yet to play it.(Came back from BGGCon with 30 games to play and with other new stuff always coming in,(just got Salmon Run in from Kickstarter yesterday and the new Ascension came in) I am having trouble getting it to the table, looks like I will have to increase my effort to put it in my play roster).
This looks like a great game, can’t wait to try it out. Looks like the civilization video game in board game format!
This is from the same guy who designed Merchants and Marauders. I can’t wait to play it. It’s a beautiful game sitting in the kitchen next to the table as I write this. However, it is a 4 hour game… most likely 5 or 6 the first time through. This is going to be an all-day affair.
Is Granny up to it? We’ll see.
Very interesting! Settlements, barbarians and ships, oh my! It sounds like a happy mash-up of Settlers and Kingsburg or Settlers of Catan + expansions on steroids, but with a turn limit to reduce play time. Since I enjoy those games, this is definitely worth a look. Thank you for the review and bringing it to our attention.
Heck yes, this is going on my Wishlist!
