Star Trek: The Next Generation had seven successful seasons on television and won 18 Emmy awards – so naturally it has inspired hobby games of all sorts for decades. It introduced a whole new Generation (ahem) to the world of Star Trek. It’s in that spirit Bandai produced a striking deck-building experience based on the travels of Jean-Luc Picard and crew. The game is rich with Star Trek Next Gen images, references, missions and enemies. If Trek is your thing, permission granted to come aboard and learn more!
This would be a great way to get me, a trek fan for ages, into card games.
I’ve heard it’s a great game. Sadly I’m not a TNG fan. I would be interested if they ever do a set based on Original trek or DS9, etc…
This game sounds really fun. I’m definately going to have to try it before I risk the cash on it, because I’m just not that big of a STtNG fan (go DS9!) to have it as a “collector’s item”. I’m going to check it out.
@ Magno
It did take my boyfriend and me longer to play the first time than what was said on the box, but not by terribly much and we attribute that to it being a new game for both of us. Not sure how adding more players or different scenarios changes the time, though; we’ve only played the basic scenario.
Every game you guys review happens to be newly placed on the shelves at the LGS….strange forces are at play.
I heard this game is pretty good, but that it takes a reallllly long time to play. Thanks for the review though, it’s nice to see the unboxing and get some more details. I think I’m gonna pick it up.
@ Shadrach
I also started re-watching all the STNG episodes… still on season one.
I too enjoy this game even coming from playing the original Star Trek Next Gen CCG from Decipher. I think the card graphics were better from Decipher, but this game is much more accessible and the in-play deck building experience is fun! And yes there is always that “aha!” moment when you see the images from the episodes…
Excellent review! I have only played this game a couple of times, but I’ve had fun with it. I do agree that the rulebook could have been designed a bit better, but that’s really a minor quibble with an overall great game.
It’s been especially fun for me since I recently started rewatching the Next Generation episodes, so I was able to identify which episodes a lot of the art came from.
