I have been putting some of the Kickstarters out on my blog but have only backed a couple. I am a big supporter of my FLGS so I try and buy them there if I can.
Area 1851 just posted a helpful gameplay / overview video 🙂
The mysterious game with the fun and funky art just got an alien autopsy
@JAY I see – I think I may have caught a whiff of that or perhaps someone else did the same thing and caused the same stink
@HaiKulture – short story of Eminent Domain – very very delayed shipping. It was supposed to arrive before GenCon. Didn’t. Tasty Minstrel took what batches they did have and took them to GenCon along with Kickstarter Exclusives. Many people unhappy with the broken promise of exclusives going to GenCon people before them. Yada yada. They probably learned their lesson:)
@JAY Atkinson – my most humblest of apologies Sir! It was about 6am and I had just gotten up and had written Jim the Admin so my mind was filled with Jims. 🙂 You will now be JAY all caps forever in my BGdot heart 🙂 *hug*
I know the Kickstarter feeling about ‘Why not just wait?’ (Now I am curious about Eminent Domain controversy.) Sometimes for both a developer and backers, a campaign can be more of a pain cave than anything else. Harkening back to Shadows of Brimstone it is a wonder Flying Frog would want to make another game 🙁 It certainly wasn’t a FUNd raiser for them or loyal fans.
@HaiKulture & others spreading the word on our board game cafe, thank you! I introduced Dragon’s Hoard to last month’s game night & they didn’t want to play anything else during 2 hours! So yeah, we could definitely use more since we couldn’t sleeve the cards. 🙂
I suspect the huge jump in KS games these past 2 months are so they’ll be prepped & ready for the convention season. I’m a little nervous that Westerly rebooted their 3rd time WAY too quickly.
I’ve only backed one Kickstarter – Eminent Domain. It was quite painful, and I hear it’s not the worst of Kickstarter snafu’s. I feel sorry for the flak Michael Mendes went through for it, but Tasty Minstrel Games still appears to be going strong. With that experience, I’ve decided to wait for the games to actually get published and shipped and reviewed. However, if I hadn’t just sold off some games to cover major car repairs recently, I’d be sorely tempted to back Sentinels Tactics. I really like Sentinels!
@HaiKulture – it’s JAY Atkinson. So’kay, you’re forgiven;)
Oh yeah… I got me an email and signed up quick for the full kit and kaboodle. Shut up and take my money already!
@Account Deletion *hee hee* I had to post that spoiler 🙂 I think The BGdot might have more Sentinel Love flowing through its veins than the actual >G Homepage! I’m glad there wasn’t any EB nonsense – by the time I got home from my doctor’s appointment I think they were 2/3’s funded. Sheesh! 20 minutes and you were 150??!!?*o Multi-million verse! 🙂
The first thing I did after throwing money at their faces with wild glee and abandon was contact them about an entry page for the Top 10 🙂 I think it t’would be fun to rally around. (I would gladly accept Capes and Villains (on Kickstarter now!) as a close second 😉 )
Hmmmm…let’s see @Account is in. @Granny? Yes? @Paladin and @Jim Atkinson? Hmmm…I am going to have to poke around with a stick and see if I can find my BGdot chums 🙂 🙂 🙂
@Kaleb I’ll contact you via a note through the KS campaign but The Boy and I might have a game or two lying around our dragon’s horde of a collection to send you as a donation also if you hit the mark. 🙂 🙂
Hmmmmm…I wonder if we could have a BGdot community service program in that regard 🙂
@Jim ???? 😉

I have to agree – I may never set foot in the place (let alone Nebraska) but it is definitely a project worth supporting. I am a strong advocate of ‘Gamers Helping Gamers’ (since we are all in this addiction of a hobby together.) I’m in – once I take stock (and maybe sell some stocks :P) of my Kickstarter wake of budget destruction this month.
And this project definitely deserves a place on the KickHotSheet this week 🙂
Sheesh – Kickstarter March sort of came in like a lamb for me and it is going out like a lion with my credit card in its mouth! I volunteered to ‘pose’ as Mud Honey for the Capes and Villains spoof of the old Marvel Swimsuit Calendars in the back of their Dossier Art Book to help raise funds – it may just be me wearing a barrel Monopoly Poor House Style 😛
Sentinel Tactics looks splendiferous.
@Bit and Bot Massacre –
Check out @Kaleb below… he’s the brain behind Spielbound, and I believe it’s his collection that will make up the library. I may never get to Omaha, NE (if Saddle Creek couldn’t get me there, I don’t know if anything will), but I’m trying to scrounge up the funds to back at the t-shirt level to support. Looks awesome!
Well this was a first… somebody beat grysqrl to making a Sentinels announcement on here!
Much appreciated Hai. I started monitoring Kickstarter as soon as I read your post earlier. I was pledged less than 20 minutes after the project launched… and I was the 150th backer! This is going to do very well…
Anyone in or around the Omaha, NE area might be interested in this:

a board game cafe idea. The gist is that the folks behind it want to renovate an old bar to accommodate a membership-based or per-day use fee driven place to play games, with a promised library of over 1000 games. The idea is very intriguing, and I plan on pledging some money in support.
Sentinel Tactics has gone hot!

Simple levels, no Early Birds, and >G always runs a generous campaign.
Sentinels ‘ssemble! Welcome to 30 days in the Multiverse!
Dear Sentinels of the Multiverse Friendly BGdot,
Apparently Sentinel Tactics launches today Tuesday March 25th?
Kicked about the rumor mill – The Boy stumbled across this information in a Galactic Strike Force update today.
Well – I shall be there with bells on – but this is strangely the softest launch I could imagine. Nothing in the recent >G newsletter? No updates to Multiverse campaigns?
But courtesy of cut and paste – here’s the quote:
Finally, we want to let you all know that we’ll be launching another Kickstarter campaign tomorrow for Sentinel Tactics, a hex-grid tactical combat game based on our Sentinels of the Multiverse characters. Although Galactic Strike Force was delayed in order to perfect the gameplay, it is now entirely complete and has been out of our hands at the printer for six weeks, so this will in no way further delay the ship-out of your rewards.
So….I guess it won’t be a soft launch for long though. See you there!
(P.S. If you found this information useful – what better compliment to glorious Sentinel Tactics than Capes and Villains! Conveniently on Kickstarter now! 🙂 *hug*)
(P.S.S. Ummm…I have a doctor’s appointment in the morning, so if there is any Early Bird nonsense, someone hold me a place please :))
Thinking about the MERCS Recon. I have gotten several euros lately, have several card games, have Tiny Epic Kingdoms and Agents of SMERSH Swagman’s Hope and oddball Aeronauts coming via KS. But when it comes down to it, I really like tactical miniatures games, so if I back MERCS Recon, I should be able to keep from buying much else this year…hopefully.
@jblaske Thanks 🙂
Aside from ‘The Wild, Wild West’ (yet another thing my Daddy warped my childhood with, but he had already passed on his geek blood. I loved the gadgets. Who didn’t spend a Saturday Morning running around outside pretending to be a saloon girl spy with gadgets? 🙂 ) which sort of invented Steampunk without knowing it – the Cowpunk universe is fresh and fun and really lets you run wild, wild with the art themes.
The card drafting/combo building/ with a hint of worker/assistant placement is a nice mix. I guess there is no anchor point in the Cardboard Kingdom 🙂 I’m excited to see the gameplay video.
For Cowpokes and Cowpunk check out Area 1851 !
(*cough*…and Capes & Villains *cough* 😉 *hee hee*)
@Hai Thanks!
Theme
At the beginning I said “This needs to be set in the wild west in some way” and the game also had to have the base mechanism of the card drafting/passing hands around the table.
From that point, it started to organically form into the tinkering mixing matching type of game that is it is now. At that point I decided that we should throw a strange angle and try to see if it could be a funny game as well, and that’s when the aliens came in.
I sat down with my buddy Ian Stone and we built up a universe where this would happen and that’s pretty much how it formed.
Gameplay
Your question is one that I’m asked a lot and always struggle to come up with an answer to. There really isn’t another game that Area 1851 plays similar to. Any time I try to tie a similarity to it, it just doesn’t work out right. Hopefully we can have the gameplay video up soon so everyone can see how it goes.
