Settlers is an amazing game that puts the age old classic Monopoly to shame, literally. I compare it to Monopoly because the game circulates heavily around you making deals with other players and in the end you sometimes back stab one another for the win. Above almost anything else in a game I value player interaction. This game allows you to toy with your opponents minds or secretly cooperate and work together until you see fit to break alliances with one another. I tend to play this game with a sadistic bunch…

Settlers is based on commodity trading. You gain commodities by rolling dice. If you roll a number that is on the territory you’ve placed a settlement on, you get the commodities that territory produces. You can also get commodities by trading yours with other players. There are also action cards that allow you to manipulate the game state, steal things from each other, and assist you when turning commodities in for building materials.

Settlers of Catan is a fun game you can bring to a family party and play with 3-4 people for many hours on end. You can also play this game and get into lots of heated debates with your college buddies, drinking buddies, or at your local shop on gamer nights. Settlers is a well rounded board game and is full fun. I highly recommend purchasing it, and I personally feel it is a must have game!

Magic The Gathering is one of those games you love to hate. You love it when you’re winning and you hate it when you’re losing. WOTC has done a bang up job at making “Land” into the perfect scapegoat resource for all to blame as the reason they lost the game; I myself am guilty of this cruel reality. The developers of Magic The Gathering know their audience and are great at getting the word out about new cards that are very similar to older more powerful cards. This creates a nostalgic reminder for older players of why they previously had a cardboard crack addiction and loved playing Magic in the first place, this often brings them promptly back into the game.

If you’re looking into getting into Magic for the first time, so far I probably haven’t made much sense. Basically you’re getting yourself into a world you will most likely fall deep into and enjoy for many years to come. The downside to Magic The Gathering is: it is an expensive habit that can suck the life out of your wallet, it can take up way too much of your time, and even for some cause poor hygiene. I would caution anyone in the category of a new player to tread carefully when making your decision to join the pool of players for this amazing game.

The economics behind the game can be mind boggling and the the artwork, especially with thin the last few sets, is absolutely stunning. If you like highly strategic and creative games, Magic The Gathering definitely gets my vote for an amazing choice to play. With that said once you’ve started down the road of Magic The Gathering you will likely be a life long player dedicated to it more so than any other game on your roster. Be prepared to give up some time you spend on current long time favorites if you start playing. It is well worth starting up if you can afforded the time and money commitment. You have been forewarned!

I learned to play from a friend at a local hobby store. The game was easy to pick up as I play games like MTG, L5R, ARC, Etc. I found myself instantly enjoying Ascension as I really enjoy drafting in MTG. The game was easy to learn and on IOS it’s even easier! It helps you along and the pace is very fast.

I soon taught my girlfriend how to play in hopes it would be a gateway drug/game to more addictive and ultra dorky games lol. Instead of moving to other games we just keep playing Ascension! The each player takes their own turn allows the game to play similar to Words With Friends on IOS, which is very convenient if you’re not able to sit and play for 10-15 minutes without stopping. If you can play for 10-15 minutes without stopping it goes by quick and you can sometimes get 2-3 full games in within that amount of time.

The physical card game is loads of fun as well. Although it’s a bit slower paced and not as convenient as the IOS, it is still a blast. In fact, my only beef is the artwork. The artwork is different and cool, but the game could be SO MUCH MORE COOL if the artwork was better. I highly recommend picking this game up as well as its expansions, you wont be disappointed.
