Batman Fluxx
It’s game night in Gotham, and everyone's favorite Caped Crusader is on the job. Crime is running amok and no-one can win with Villains on the table — so put on your utility belts and leap into the fray to help Batman and his friends clean things up! Draw one and Play one is just the beginning… From camp to chaos, Batman Fluxx has something for every bat-fan!
It all begins with one basic rule: Draw one card, Play one card. You start with a hand of three cards... add the card you drew to your hand, and then choose one card to play, following the directions written on your chosen card. As cards are drawn and played from the deck, the rules of the game change from how many cards are drawn, played or even how many cards you can hold at the end of your turn.

Let’s start by saying it is very hard to get most flux games to the table at my weekly gaming meetup. It is brought by many people but never seems to get to the table. So I never played it until this week when I bought it and played it with my wife.
The game is very easy to learn and moves quickly. With the end of game requirement and the play rules constantly changing it has great replay-ability. The game is played by 2-6 players trying to meet the current requirement to end the game while dealing with other players modifying the rules in almost every round.
The batman theme makes the game a favorite for me and the fact that 6 players can play means I can play it with my Grandchildren and their parents.
I am not sure this game will go over with my senior citizens friends that play games with my wife and I. The nature of the rules changing may be frustrating to them.
After playing the game I am confused why it is so hard to get to the table at our gaming nights.
Rules:
Clear and easy to learn. Once you know any Fluxx you know all Fluxx games. Just new themes.
Components:
Good quality
Value:
Low priced and plays from 2-6 people
Play time:
5-30 Minutes
Having never played any of the other variants or the original of Fluxx before, I was initially attracted to this game because of the particular Batman artwork they decided to go with. It’s the artwork from Batman: The Animated Series (1992-1995) … which I (and others) regard as one of the best Batman cartoons with it’s art deco styling.
Anyway, Batman Fluxx differs from the original Fluxx with the inclusion of Creepers (I believe these were added with Zombie Fluxx) as the Batman Villains. The gameplay varies each time you play it because the rules change based on the cards played and the players themselves. This is both a blessing and curse as you can have one game that last 2 minutes or you can have one game lasting half an hour.
Don’t be surprised that when you introduce this game to new players, that most of them are confused. Be patience, because after a couple of rounds, they’ll easily understand it’s mechanics.
I tend to like more strategic games so I am not a big fan of totally random games. That being said this is one version I will play again. If you have not played Fluxx before the base game is simple. You start with a hand of 3 cards. You draw 1 card and then you play 1 card. The cards are keepers: which you play down in front of you and fulfill the current goal to win. Goals: which determine how someone wins which are usually based off of keepers, but not always. Important note here: If a goal is played and anyone meets it they win immediately. Action cards which have you perform an action immediately after played. New Rules: which change the basic rules immediately. If you play a draw 3 card for instance you would immediately draw 2 more cards and everyone else now draws 3 and plays 1. Other elements in this one that were introduced in later versions of the game are creepers: which are like keepers, but usually with a negative game effect, and Surprises which can be played on someone else’s turn or on your own turn and have a different game effect depending on when you play it. New rules stay in effect unless removed by other cards, but goals replace previously played ones so that the goal needed to win is always changing. I have not played all versions of the game, but for me the new effect that I liked is that the keepers, which were in the past static and only good for satisfying the goals, now have ongoing game effects and so add a little strategy to the game. It helps if you like comics and/or are familiar with Batman as a whole but is not necessary to play the game. As I said before this is the most strategic version of the game I have played but don’t worry it is still light enough for the casual or social gamer to enjoy it.
This is an interesting addition to the Fluxx Universe of Games. Instead of using the Batman movies and Comics ( which they may have had trouble getting the rights for ) they went back the the Animated Batman Cartoon series. This is a good thing because the animated nature of the series gives a better artistic addition to the cards then trying to convert the Movie or comic art to the cards.
This game is excellent and should not be missed by any Fluxx enthusiast because of the nostalgic nature and ease of play. It can be a good introduction for younger players and new players alike.
Note: a promotional card was included in Game Trade Magazine a few months ago and if it can be found it adds to the game.
Good playing.
Fluxx in general is either liked or hated. Myself and the lady are on the side of loving it. As far as all the Fluxx games go, this one is one of my favorites. Mainly because I’m a comic book nerd. The set up is easy and after one practice round you’ll be ready!!! The cards have the basic batman animated series art and looking at them is not a bad thing. Although, some sick comic book art would have been amazing, but it probably would feel out of character with Fluxx’s crazy play. I recommend this to families and or people who want to play a real quick and easy card game. Replay may be limited, but I am sure it will be fun to play here and there for years to come.
